TIMOTHY EVANS FROM FERRYSIDE JAILED FOR ONLINE SEX CRIMES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL IN BIRMINGHAM

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Timothy Evans, a 39-year-old medical professional from Ferryside, Carmarthenshire, Wales, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for engaging in disturbing online sexual activities with a teenage girl. The incident, which took place in Birmingham, involved Evans adopting a false identity to communicate with the minor, raising serious concerns about online safety and the conduct of individuals in positions of trust.

According to court records, Evans, who was a registrar at both the Queen Elizabeth and Good Hope Hospitals in Birmingham, created a fictitious Skype profile in February 2012. Under the guise of a 15-year-old boy, he initiated conversations with a girl who claimed to be 13 years old and residing in Norway. The communication primarily consisted of text messages and chat exchanges, during which Evans encouraged the girl to reveal intimate details about herself, including her body parts. The court heard that Evans's actions were driven by his own sexual gratification, with the messages revealing a disturbing pattern of grooming behavior.

Evans’s arrest came in April 2016 when West Midlands Police detained him on suspicion of engaging in sexual activity in front of a child. During the investigation, authorities seized three of his computers, which upon examination, confirmed the existence of the fake Skype account. Evans initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming that another member of his medical department might have been responsible for setting up the accounts. However, evidence presented in court proved otherwise.

The court was told that between September 3 and 4, 2012, Evans used the fake Skype profile to communicate with the Norwegian girl. The messages included requests for her to show her breasts and other parts of her body via video streaming. The court also indicated that Evans might have communicated with at least one other child, suggesting a pattern of predatory behavior.

During the trial, Evans’s defense attorney, Sarah Elliott, emphasized that there was no evidence to suggest he had attempted to meet any of the children in person. She also highlighted that Evans had suffered trauma in his own childhood, which she argued contributed to his psychological state. She explained that his work involved retrieving organs from teenage car crash victims, a task that had caused him significant emotional distress. As a result, Evans had transferred to emergency surgery, but the pressures of his job reportedly led him to develop issues with alcohol and gambling.

Ms. Elliott further stated that Evans had been suspended from practicing medicine since 2016 and had lost his home, his marriage, and limited access to his children. The court was told that his professional and personal life had been severely impacted by his actions.

Judge Simon Drew QC, presiding over the case, sentenced Evans to two and a half years in prison. In his remarks, the judge condemned Evans’s actions as driven by sexual gratification, noting the premeditated nature of the account setup. The judge pointed out that Evans had engaged in video chats with the girl, during which he asked to see her breasts and other parts of her body. He also expressed concern that Evans might have targeted other children, given the evidence of communication with at least one additional victim.

Judge Drew highlighted the aggravating factors in the case, including the clear planning involved and the significant age disparity between Evans and the girl. He also noted that Evans had requested the girl’s friends to participate in the online exchanges, further demonstrating a disturbing pattern of behavior.

Reflecting on Evans’s career, the judge acknowledged that he qualified as a doctor in 2003 and had been working at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since 2009. Despite this, the judge emphasized that Evans’s stressful and demanding life did not excuse his criminal conduct. He stated, “It is clear from all the evidence I have heard that you lived a very stressful and demanding life. As a result of those pressures, you clearly began to struggle with the burden of responsibility. None of that provides an excuse for what then happened.”

While recognizing Evans’s positive character and contributions to society, Judge Drew concluded that his actions warranted a significant custodial sentence, reflecting the seriousness of the crimes committed and the harm caused to the victims involved.
