MAN SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS FOR SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES
A man from Huddersfield has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 17 years after being found guilty of committing historic sexual offences involving a young child. The sentencing follows a thorough investigation into allegations that date back over a decade.
Timothy Bird, aged 44 at the time of sentencing, was convicted in August on multiple charges related to non-recent sexual offences.
These charges included attempted rape, sexual assault, and inciting a young child to engage in sexual activity.
The offences are believed to have occurred between the years 2008 and 2009, according to reports from West Yorkshire Police.
The victim, a female child at the time, only disclosed the abuse many years later when she was an older teenager.
Her decision to come forward prompted an investigation carried out by child safeguarding detectives associated with Kirklees Police.
The seriousness of the allegations and the circumstances surrounding the case led to a detailed investigation, ultimately resulting in Bird’s arrest in 2020.
Following his arrest, Timothy Bird was brought before the court, and today, October 5, 2022, he was formally sentenced to 17 years in prison.
The case was led by Detective Constable Suzanne Clark, who expressed her thoughts on the sentencing.
She stated, "Bird richly deserves his sentence for committing very serious sexual offences against a young victim who was very much at his mercy." DC Clark highlighted the bravery of the victim, saying, "Her courage in coming forward years later and reporting what he did allowed detectives to fully investigate this case and bring this devious and predatory man to justice." Her comments underscore the importance of victims speaking out, regardless of the time that has passed since the offending occurred.
The police involved emphasised their ongoing commitment to supporting victims of sexual offences.
They urged anyone who has experienced similar crimes to come forward, assuring them that the police will thoroughly investigate all reports, regardless of how long ago the incidents took place.
Their message reinforced the principle that justice can be pursued at any time, and that many victims find strength in reporting their experiences to the authorities.
