THOMAS WINTERS FROM GAINESBOROUGH AND UPTON FACES JAIL OVER CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN LINCOLN

In a case that has once again highlighted the ongoing issue of child exploitation and the dangers posed by individuals with predatory tendencies, Thomas Winters, a resident of Upton near Gainsborough, has been warned he could face imprisonment following his involvement with indecent images of children.

Winters, aged 64, was initially brought before Lincoln Crown Court in July of the previous year after a police raid uncovered disturbing evidence at his home in Upton. During the January 2010 operation, officers seized Winters' computer, which was found to contain over 1,300 indecent images of minors, all downloaded from the internet. This discovery led to his initial sentencing, where he was given a three-year community order, a penalty that was intended to serve as a deterrent and a chance for rehabilitation.

As part of his sentence, Winters was explicitly ordered not to possess any software capable of deleting his search history, a restriction aimed at preventing him from concealing his activities. Despite this, just 23 days after being sentenced, police officers returned to his residence following reports of suspicious activity. During this subsequent visit, they discovered Winters was using a computer equipped with software that allowed him to erase his browsing history, directly violating the terms of his previous order.

Further investigation of the computer revealed additional indecent images of children, intensifying concerns about Winters' ongoing involvement in such illegal activities. On August 22, 2012, Winters pleaded guilty in court to possessing 124 indecent images of minors. He also admitted to breaching a sexual offences prevention order by using a computer capable of deleting his search history, which was a clear violation of the restrictions imposed on him.

During the court proceedings, Winters expressed remorse, telling the judge, “It will never happen again.” Despite his plea, the judge, Michael Heath, decided to adjourn sentencing to gather more information regarding the offences for which Winters was initially sentenced. The judge issued a stern warning, emphasizing that bail did not guarantee a non-custodial sentence, stating, “I’m going to adjourn the sentence so that I can have all the relevant information before me. The fact that I grant you bail today does not mean that I won’t send you to prison when I come to sentence you.”

Winters was granted bail and is scheduled to return to Lincoln Crown Court for sentencing next month, although the exact date has yet to be confirmed. The case underscores the persistent threat posed by individuals who seek to exploit children online and highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to combat such heinous crimes.
