SKELTON MAN SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE
A man who carried out horrific abuse on a young girl over three decades ago has been imprisoned after her courageous decision to contact the authorities.Thomas Wadsworth received a six-year prison sentence following his misconduct against the girl when he was in his early twenties. During a hearing at Teesside Crown Court, it was revealed that the victim came forward in 2022, prompting child abuse investigators from the CAVA (Child Abuse and Vulnerable Adults) team to provide her with specialist support as their inquiry progressed.
Despite the difficulties posed by the significant amount of time that had passed, law enforcement officers managed to bring charges against Wadsworth last summer. The 54-year-old was convicted earlier this month of gross indecency with a child and indecent assault during the trial at Teesside Crown Court.
The survivor endured profound and enduring effects from the abuse suffered many years prior, but she displayed remarkable bravery in reporting the crime and supporting the police investigation throughout.
Detective Constable Suzanne Higginson expressed her support, saying, “It’s hoped that Wadsworth’s guilty verdict and his consequent imprisonment provide some solace to the courageous woman as she continues her journey of healing and recalling such a traumatic experience from her childhood.”
Wadsworth appeared for sentencing on Friday, September 20. Detective Chief Inspector Matt Murphy King of CAVA added, “Wadsworth likely believed he would never face consequences for his terrible deeds so many years ago, but once the victim came forward, we were committed to securing justice for her. We encourage anyone with information about abuse to report it. Victim-survivors can expect full support from police and expert agencies during the inquiry, through court proceedings, and beyond.”
