THOMAS FINNEY FROM WORKSOP SENTENCED FOR ONLINE SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL IN ROTHERHAM

A court in Sheffield has issued a stern warning to Thomas Finney, a 27-year-old man from Worksop, after he was found guilty of engaging in sexually explicit communications with a young teenage girl through online platforms. The incident, which took place over a period of approximately three and a half months, involved Finney sending the girl, who was between 13 and 14 years old at the time, explicit messages and images, raising serious concerns about the exploitation of vulnerable minors.

During the hearing at Sheffield Crown Court on May 25, the prosecution outlined the disturbing details of Finney’s online behavior. It was revealed that he had sent the girl an image depicting a man and woman engaged in sexual intercourse, alongside discussing sexual acts with her. Additionally, Finney had sent her an explicit image of his private parts, further demonstrating the predatory nature of his actions. The court was also informed that Finney had discussed the possibility of meeting the girl in person and had even mentioned that he was moving to a new address, suggesting that she might come to live with him.

Andrew Bailey, the prosecutor, emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that Finney’s actions had a lasting impact on the young victim. Judge Rachael Harrison addressed Finney directly, highlighting the vulnerability of the girl and the significant age difference between them. She acknowledged that Finney did not necessarily target her because of her age, but the fact remained that he communicated with her in a highly sexual manner over an extended period, which was deeply concerning.

Finney’s criminal record was also discussed, revealing that he had previous convictions unrelated to this case. He pleaded guilty to charges of communicating sexually with a minor between January and April of 2019. His defense attorney, Francis Edusei, argued that Finney was a man in need of help and that he had responded positively to community-based support programs. Edusei pointed out that Finney had not committed any further offenses since the incident and had the backing of his family.

Despite these mitigating factors, Judge Harrison sentenced Finney to a two-year community order, which includes a requirement for rehabilitation. He was also fined £100. The judge made it clear that if Finney failed to engage with the help offered or reoffended, he would face imprisonment. She warned him sternly, stating, “If you come back I will send you to prison. Do you understand? If you do not do what I have just ordered you will go to prison. Do you understand?”

Furthermore, Finney was ordered to register as a sex offender and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period, underscoring the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing risk he poses to the community. The court’s verdict serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable minors from exploitation.
