THOMAS COLE: NEWCASTLE PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED TO INDEFINITE IMPRISONMENT
In October 2009, Thomas Cole, a notorious paedophile from Newcastle, was handed an indefinite prison sentence by the court, a decision aimed at safeguarding the public from his predatory behavior. The 61-year-old offender will be required to serve a minimum of five years behind bars, but his eventual release will depend on assessments of whether he still poses a danger to society.
Thomas Cole, who resides at Merlay Hall in Walker, Newcastle, has a long and disturbing history of child sex offenses dating back to the 1970s.
His latest criminal act involved grooming a 14-year-old boy earlier this year, an incident that prompted his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
The court heard that Cole had ingratiated himself with the family of his young victim at a local pub, establishing a seemingly friendly relationship before his sinister intentions surfaced.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Cole, who entered the dock using a walking stick, had become uncomfortably close to the boy, engaging in inappropriate physical contact such as kissing him on the cheek.
Prosecutor Peter Gair detailed how Cole treated the boy to meals in Chinatown, took him on visits to Beamish Museum, and maintained daily contact through text messages and phone calls.
These actions were part of a calculated plan to exploit the boy’s trust.
The court was informed that Cole’s sickening plan was to take the boy to Weymouth in Dorset, where he intended to molest him while sharing a hotel room.
Fortunately, the victim’s family grew suspicious of Cole’s behavior, contacted the police, and thwarted the trip before any harm could be inflicted.
This intervention prevented what could have been a further tragic episode of abuse.
Judge David Hodson addressed Cole directly, stating, “That clearly was for one purpose and that was to commit serious sexual offences against him.
You have demonstrated over your life on a number of occasions the offences you do commit if given the opportunity: serious sexual offences against children.” The judge emphasized that Cole’s past convictions and recent grooming behavior marked him as a high risk to children, and he described him as a very dangerous individual.
Defense lawyer Christopher Mitford acknowledged Cole’s troubled background, revealing that he had been sexually abused as a child himself.
Mitford described Cole as an isolated person who struggled to form friendships, which may have contributed to his offending behavior.
Thomas Cole’s criminal record is extensive, including three serious sex offenses involving 13-year-old boys, multiple convictions for indecent assault on boys under 16, and a conviction for abandoning two children.
He is already prohibited from working with children and is registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register, underscoring the severity of his past and ongoing threat to the community.
