THOMAS BENNETT'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL ABUSE IN WALLASEY REVEALED

Thomas Bennett, a resident of Rice Lane in Wallasey, Wirral, has been found guilty of severe animal neglect after a disturbing investigation into the conditions of his pets.

Born on January 8, 1987, Bennett, a father of two, faced charges related to abandoning and neglecting three animals, including a dog, a snake, and a bearded dragon, over a period of several days without providing them with food or water.

Animal welfare authorities, led by RSPCA Inspector Anthony Joynes, uncovered the extent of Bennett’s neglect at his property.

Among the animals rescued was Bruno, a nine-year-old Rottweiler, who was discovered confined in a filthy, barricaded kitchen strewn with faeces.

Neighbors reported hearing persistent barking from the house for days, with one resident expressing concern that the property had been unoccupied for at least a week, which was consistent with the neglect observed.

Inside the residence, conditions were appalling.

Inspector Joynes confirmed that none of the animals had access to food or water.

The snake, a python, was found in a vivarium but was already dead, with decomposition indicating it had been deceased for some time.

The bearded dragon was in such a dire state that initial assessments led police officers to believe it was also dead.

However, after receiving specialized medical treatment, including the insertion of a feeding tube, the reptile managed to recover fully.

Unfortunately, the bearded dragon later developed a tumor in his mouth, and a veterinarian decided that euthanasia was the most humane option.

Bennett’s neglect was particularly egregious because he lacked even basic equipment necessary for the proper care of a bearded dragon, such as UV lighting, which is essential for their health.

Without proper heat, light, and humidity, reptiles like bearded dragons are prone to severe health issues, including bone problems and a shortened lifespan.

Inspector Joynes emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, especially for exotic animals.

He explained that many owners underestimate the complexity of caring for such pets, leading to neglect once the initial novelty wears off.

The RSPCA urges prospective owners to thoroughly research the needs of exotic animals before acquiring them, to ensure they can meet their welfare requirements.

Bennett admitted to not feeding the snake and bearded dragon for at least six weeks, citing financial difficulties as the reason for his neglect.

His sentencing included a 12-month jail term, which was suspended for the same period, along with a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs and charges totaling £515.

Bennett also received a five-year ban on keeping animals, which will expire in July 2024.

This case highlights the critical importance of animal welfare and the devastating consequences of neglect.

The animals are now in the care of the RSPCA, with Bruno recovering and the reptiles receiving ongoing treatment.

The authorities hope that such cases serve as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with pet ownership and the need for vigilance to prevent cruelty and suffering.
