TERRY FROM WITHAM ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT IN COLCHESTER ON NEW YEAR'S EVE

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Terry, a resident of Witham, narrowly avoided imprisonment after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman during a New Year’s Eve celebration in Colchester. The incident, which took place on the night of December 31, 2018, into the early hours of January 1, 2019, involved Terry-lee Bickmore, aged 35, who committed two separate acts of sexual misconduct against the victim.

According to court records, Bickmore first inappropriately grabbed the woman’s breast while they were at a lively nightspot in Colchester, a popular destination known for its vibrant nightlife. The assault did not end there; after the nightspot closed, the woman, along with others, returned to a private residence. It was at this house that Bickmore continued his inappropriate behavior by groping her backside.

During the trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, Bickmore admitted to two counts of sexual assault. A third charge related to similar conduct was left on file, meaning it was not pursued further but could be considered in future proceedings if necessary. The victim has reportedly been left deeply traumatized by the events, experiencing emotional distress and mental health struggles. However, Judge David Turner QC noted that he could not definitively attribute her mental health issues solely to the assaults, emphasizing the complexity of her condition.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Turner described Bickmore’s actions as a clear breach of respect and decency. He stated, “Your behaviour was completely out of line. You lacked respect and decency. It was a sexual assault in a place where she was entitled to feel free, safe, and able to enjoy herself.” The judge highlighted that Bickmore had stared at the woman in a manner that made her uncomfortable before crossing the line into physical assault.

Judge Turner also acknowledged the victim’s mental health struggles, including suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and stress, and recognized the real impact Bickmore’s actions had on her life. While noting Bickmore’s previous convictions, the judge pointed out that there had been a 17-year gap since his last offense, which influenced his decision.

As part of his sentence, Bickmore was handed a four-month jail term, suspended for two years. Additionally, he is required to complete 100 hours of unpaid community work and attend 30 days of rehabilitation programs aimed at addressing behavioral issues. A restraining order was issued, prohibiting him from contacting the victim or visiting her home for three years. Furthermore, Bickmore is mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.
