TERRY YATES AND SHOCKING ONLINE SEXUAL CHAT IN WARRINGTON

A man from Warrington has been allowed to walk free from court despite engaging in disturbing online conversations with someone he believed was a young girl.

Terry Yates, aged 39, was involved in sending explicit messages to what he thought was a minor, but in reality, he was communicating with a member of a paedophile hunter group dedicated to catching child sex offenders.

Yates appeared before Liverpool Crown Court on a Monday to face charges related to attempting to engage in sexual communications with a minor.

The court decided not to impose an immediate prison sentence, citing the need for him to receive appropriate help and treatment outside of incarceration.

The judge emphasized that this approach was intended to address the underlying issues and prevent future offending.

Prosecutor Olivia Beesley detailed the case, explaining that Yates first sent a Facebook friend request to a profile operated by paedophile hunters, claiming to be a 14-year-old girl, on May 5 of that year.

The following month, on June 3, he began messaging the profile, which was part of an undercover operation.

During these exchanges, Yates asked the girl to look at his genitals, using explicit language.

Despite being made aware that the girl was only 14, he continued to communicate, referring to her as 'gorgeous' and 'his beautiful princess.' The defendant also sent explicit videos and photographs of himself, and he requested that the girl send him a video of herself giggling, along with images of her in her school uniform.

The disturbing messages and images highlighted his inappropriate intentions and disregard for her age.

The situation escalated when members of the paedophile hunter group confronted Yates at his residence on Whitworth Close in Birchwood on July 2.

Cheshire Police officers responded to the scene, leading to his arrest.

The court heard that as a consequence of his arrest, Yates lost his job at an Amazon warehouse, although he has since secured new employment.

It was also revealed that Yates has a prior conviction from 2004 for handling stolen goods, indicating a history of criminal behavior.

During the hearing, his defense lawyer, Jeremy Rawson, argued that Yates has shown remorse and an understanding of the gravity of his actions.

Rawson stated that his client recognizes the wrongfulness of his conduct and expressed regret, acknowledging that had the situation involved a real minor, the consequences would have been far more severe.

Rawson further described Yates as a man who, prior to this incident, had a wife, a home, a job, and a social circle, but who now finds himself isolated due to his actions.

The lawyer emphasized that Yates has managed to retain his employment and housing but has lost other aspects of his personal life.

Before passing sentence, the court’s recorder, Mark Ainsworth, described the case as 'frankly appalling' and expressed outrage at the defendant’s behavior.

He highlighted that such conduct is a nightmare for parents and a source of societal disgust.

The judge pointed out that Yates was explicitly told the girl was only 14, yet he persisted in his communication.

Ainsworth noted that the impact of this case on Yates’s personal life would be significant, including the end of his marriage.

However, he also stressed that the court would ensure Yates receives the necessary help and treatment to prevent future offenses.

The judge indicated that if Yates remains trouble-free for the next two years, he could move past this chapter.

Ultimately, Yates was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community work and attend 25 days of rehabilitation activities.

Additionally, he was placed under a sexual harm prevention order and required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his misconduct.
