TERRY TANNER FROM WALLINGTON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ENCOURAGEMENT OF CHILD
In a case that has raised serious concerns about child safety and sexual misconduct, Terry Tanner, a 37-year-old resident of Wallington, was brought before Croydon Magistrates' Court in May 2018. Tanner, who resides on Hurricane Road, faced charges related to attempting to engage a minor in sexual communication, specifically encouraging a girl under the age of 16 to touch herself for his own sexual gratification.During the proceedings, it was revealed that Tanner had been involved in this inappropriate conduct over a period stretching from December 18, 2017, to April 10, 2018. The court was informed that Tanner had made multiple attempts to communicate with the young girl in a sexual manner, despite having no reason to believe she was over the age of 16 at the time of these interactions. This detail underscores the reckless disregard for the child's age and the seriousness of his actions.
In his plea of guilty, Tanner admitted to trying to initiate sexual conversations with the girl, which included attempts to persuade her to touch herself in a sexual way. These actions were clearly aimed at achieving sexual gratification at the expense of the minor's innocence and safety.
On May 29, 2018, the court delivered its judgment. Tanner was sentenced to 26 weeks in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years. This means that he will not serve time in jail unless he commits another offense within that period. The court also imposed additional measures to protect the community and prevent future harm. Tanner was ordered to pay a victim surcharge, a financial penalty intended to support victims of sexual crimes.
Furthermore, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for a duration of five years, a register that tracks individuals convicted of sexual offenses to monitor and manage their conduct post-sentencing. A sexual harm prevention order was also issued, restricting Tanner's activities and contact to reduce the risk of reoffending and to safeguard the public, especially minors.
