————————————————————————- In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Maidstone, a registered sex offender named Terence Standage has been sentenced to prison after authorities uncovered his extensive online activities involving the exploitation of children.
The investigation revealed that Standage, who resides on Charlton Lane in Maidstone, had been secretly accessing a neighbor’s WiFi network for over six years to download and view a vast collection of illegal images and videos depicting child sexual abuse.
Police first responded to reports of suspicious online activity at an address on Charlton Lane in January 2019.
During their inquiry, the homeowner disclosed that Standage had been piggybacking onto their WiFi connection without permission.
This revelation prompted law enforcement officers to execute a search warrant at Standage’s residence, where they seized various electronic devices, including a memory stick and a hard drive, for forensic analysis.
The examination of these devices uncovered nearly 12,000 illegal images and videos involving children being abused.
Among these, more than 300 were classified in the most severe category, indicating the extreme nature of the material.
The investigation also uncovered additional offences, including evidence of upskirting incidents involving multiple unidentified women on a train and a bus, further highlighting the breadth of Standage’s criminal activities.
Following these findings, Standage was formally charged with four counts of making indecent images of a child and three counts of outraging public decency.
It was also revealed that he had been recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his previous sex offence licence conditions.
Standage, who had a prior conviction, pleaded guilty to all charges during an earlier hearing at Maidstone Crown Court.
On Wednesday, May 5, the court sentenced him to two years and four months in prison.
Additionally, he was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which aims to restrict his future conduct and protect the public from further harm.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and hold offenders accountable.
Standage’s criminal history predates this incident.
In April 2010, he was sentenced to over ten years in prison after admitting to multiple serious sexual offences against children.
The offences, which involved two young girls under the age of 13, occurred in Westcliff between 2005 and 2006.
It was during his imprisonment in 2007 that authorities uncovered further offences, leading to his continued registration as a sex offender and the imposition of an indefinite Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
Detective Constable Mel Kirby of the Rayleigh Child Abuse Investigation Unit commented on the case, emphasizing the trauma inflicted on the victims and the importance of the police’s persistent efforts.
He stated, “This has been a very difficult period for the children involved, and we have maintained very regular contact throughout.
The children were extremely traumatised by these events and are currently being supported by various agencies to help them put their lives back together.
Standage has committed appalling offences against young children, and Essex Police and the family are pleased that the sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes.”
