TERENCE CAWTE FROM LEIGH PARK, PORTSMOUTH, SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF BOYS

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Terence Cawte, a 74-year-old man from Leigh Park, Portsmouth, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years after being found guilty of grooming and sexually abusing two young boys. The crimes, which date back to the 1970s, were committed during the time when Cawte served as the captain of the Leigh Park Boys’ Brigade, a position of trust and authority within the community.

His conviction was secured following an extensive eight-day trial at Portsmouth Crown Court. The jury deliberated for four and a half hours before reaching unanimous verdicts on multiple counts, including five charges of indecent assault on a male, one count of indecency with a child, and two additional sexual offences. The evidence presented painted a disturbing picture of systematic abuse carried out over a significant period.

Judge Ian Pearson, presiding over the case, delivered a stern sentence, emphasizing the gravity of Cawte’s breaches of trust. He pointed out that Cawte, who was a well-known figure in the Leigh Park community and actively involved in Leigh Park Methodist Church, had used his respected position to exploit vulnerable boys. The judge remarked, “When you committed these offences, you were a highly respected member of your local community, and I do accept that you have done a great deal of good within that community. However, these two boys looked up to you and respected you and expected you to look after them. Instead, you used your position to groom and abuse those two vulnerable boys.”

Judge Pearson further highlighted that both victims had faced significant difficulties within their home lives, which Cawte exploited to carry out his sexual abuse. The emotional scars inflicted upon the victims were described as severe, with the judge noting that the abuse was both extensive and sustained over a lengthy period.

Sarah Jones, representing Cawte, argued that despite his crimes, he had otherwise led a life of positive contribution to his community. She described him as a loving father and grandfather, emphasizing his family’s perspective. However, she also acknowledged the toll the sentence would take on him, especially given his age, stating, “In the lives of his family, Mr. Cawte has been nothing but a good and loving father and grandfather. Now, in his late 70s, he faces a sentence which may very likely mean he will not see his grandchildren again. When the verdict was read out, he aged 20 years in 20 seconds; he is no longer a well man.”

This case has left a lasting impact on the community, highlighting the dangers of abuse hidden behind seemingly respectable facades and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from exploitation by trusted figures.
