TERENCE BURNETT FROM BRIDGEND SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN WILDMLL AND GLANFFORNWG
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Bridgend, a man named Terence Burnett has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of heinous acts involving a young girl. The incident took place in the Bridgend area, specifically in the Wildmill neighborhood, where Burnett, aged 62, committed a sexual offense that has left a lasting impact on his victim.
According to court proceedings, Burnett was accused of encouraging a girl under the age of 14 to perform a gross act of indecency.
The court heard that Burnett, who resides in Glanffornwg, had been engaged in a sexual act when he asked the young girl to touch his penis.
The prosecution presented evidence that Burnett instructed the girl to use her foot to touch his genitals, claiming that this would make her feel less scared.
The jury found Burnett guilty of inciting the girl to commit this act, although he was acquitted of three other similar charges.
During the trial at Cardiff Crown Court, Judge Christopher Vosper QC addressed the court, stating, “You asked her to touch your penis – she was scared.
She remembers you told her if she touched it with her foot, it would be less scary for her.
That’s what she did.” In a poignant moment during the proceedings, a statement was read aloud from the adult victim, who is granted lifelong anonymity to protect her identity.
She described the profound psychological scars left by the abuse, which occurred during her childhood.
The victim explained that she now suffers from low self-esteem and confidence issues, which fluctuate depending on her mental state.
She revealed that she often feels as though she is waiting for something bad to happen or for punishment, and she struggles with sleep due to persistent nightmares that feel incredibly real.
Flashbacks to her childhood trauma are frequent, and she described feeling overwhelmed by these memories.
The victim also shared her feelings of shame and difficulty in admitting what happened, fearing judgment from others.
Despite these challenges, she emphasized her resilience and her efforts over the years to move forward and not let her past define her life.
Her statement highlighted the deep emotional and psychological toll inflicted by Burnett’s actions.
It was also revealed that Burnett has a lengthy criminal history, with six previous convictions encompassing a total of 38 offenses.
His past crimes include theft, shoplifting, criminal damage, and various trademark offenses, indicating a pattern of criminal behavior over the years.
In sentencing, Burnett was given an 18-month prison term.
He is expected to serve up to half of this sentence in custody before being released on license.
Additionally, he has been placed on the sex offenders register for a period of 10 years and is disqualified from working with children and vulnerable adults.
Judge Vosper emphasized the severity of the case, stating, “Any other sentence would simply not be appropriate,” underscoring the gravity of Burnett’s crimes and the need for public protection.
