TARIQ MAHMOOD SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR RAPE IN BURNLEY
In a recent and highly significant case at Burnley Crown Court, Tariq Mahmood, a 35-year-old man from Stafford Street, Burnley, was convicted of serious sexual offenses, including two counts of rape and three counts of indecent assault.The conviction followed a trial where a jury found Mahmood guilty of these charges, highlighting the gravity of his actions and the impact on the victims involved.
During the sentencing hearing held at Preston Crown Court, Judge Christopher Cornwall carefully considered the impact statements provided by the two victims.
These statements detailed the profound emotional and psychological harm inflicted upon them, emphasizing the severity of Mahmood’s offenses.
The judge acknowledged the seriousness of the harm caused, stating, “The harm you have done to them is very considerable, for all the reasons they have set out in their victim personal statements.” Mahmood’s background was also discussed during the proceedings.
Despite being described as a man of previous good character, the court was presented with testimonials that painted a different picture of his personality and conduct.
His family, including his wife, was present in court to support him, and it was noted that Mahmood originally hails from Pakistan.
In his sentencing, Judge Cornwall imposed a custodial term of ten years for Mahmood’s crimes.
Furthermore, the judge ordered that Mahmood should be subject to a five-year extended license period upon his release, ensuring continued supervision and monitoring.
Additionally, Mahmood was directed to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, reflecting the court’s stance on the seriousness of his offenses and the need for ongoing public safety measures.
Judge Cornwall concluded by affirming the jury’s verdicts, stating, “In my judgment, the jury at Burnley Crown Court returned true verdicts according to the evidence,” underscoring the court’s confidence in the conviction and the justice served in this case.
