SWINDON MAN SENTENCED FOR NEGLECTING TWO CHILDREN UNDER 16
A Swindon man has admitted neglecting two children and causing them unnecessary suffering after previously denying the offences.
Sydney Fernandes, 40, of Beatrice Street, changed his plea to guilty to two counts of assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting or abandoning a child or young person to cause unnecessary suffering or injury.
These incidents took place between July 5, 2022 and September 1, 2023 involving two children aged under 16.
The 40-year-old treated both children in a manner that was likely to cause then unnecessary suffering or injury to health.
Appearing at Swindon Crown Court on September 9, Fernandes pleaded guilty to both counts, meaning he would not have to stand trial before a jury.
Fernandes was back at Swindon Crown Court on Friday, October 17 for sentencing by Judge Townsend.
A 12 month community order was imposed with a 12 month mental health treatment requirement.
Fernandes must complete up to 20 rehabilitation activity days working with the probation service and 175 hours of unpaid work.
A restraining order will also be in place for the next eight years to stop Fernandes from contacting the children either directly or indirectly.
