YORKSHIRE WOMAN JAILED FOR STALKING EX AND BREACHING RESTRAINING ORDER
Suzanne McCue, characterized as an 'obsessive and clingy' stalker, disturbed her ex-partner’s life significantly by bombarding him with emails and issuing threats to appear at his workplace or residence.Residing in Derriford, Plymouth, McCue continued her persecution of her former partner after their relationship ended in 2019, despite multiple court actions and a restraining order issued against her.
She sent numerous messages, including images of invoices indicating plans to travel to Keighley, where her ex lived, and to stay in a Travelodge hotel.
Prosecutor Michael Brown explained that the couple had been together for approximately a year until their breakup in 2019, after which McCue’s behaviour became 'obsessive and clingy.' This led to a two-year restraining order in February 2020, which she breached on two occasions.
Her repeated violations led to a court appearance in August 2021, where she received a suspended sentence of 26 weeks for a year.
The restraining order was also extended for another year.
The now 53-year-old was brought before the court again after breaching the order once more by emailing her ex repeatedly and messaging him on social media.
She was remanded into custody but later admitted guilt.
Mr.
Brown stated that McCue sent around 500 emails from different accounts during September and October 2021, in which she pleaded with him to contact her, made threats to visit his hometown, and even sent photos of her hotel stay and a train ticket.
Some messages included sexually explicit content.
In a victim statement, the man explained that her threats of coming to his work or home made daily life stressful and isolating, forcing him to live in darkness with the lights off for safety reasons.
He also expressed fear about attending court in Plymouth due to safety concerns.
Investigations revealed that McCue appeared to have difficulty accepting the end of their relationship.
Her legal representative, Nick Lewin, mentioned that she had spent seven months in custody, which was comparable to a 14-month sentence, during which she underwent therapy and was prescribed medications for depression and anxiety.
Lewin stressed her changed outlook on the relationship, claiming she now maintained complete disinterest in her ex.
The judge pointed out that McCue had appeared distressed during the hearing, covering her ears at times, and described her as a complex individual with underlying mental health and alcohol issues.
She was told that her actions over nearly three years had severely complicated her victim’s life.
Expressing skepticism about her claims of change, the judge noted past breaches despite her time in custody and counseling.
She was advised that her seven months of detention and therapy should have demonstrated the seriousness of her conduct.
The court sentenced her to 13 months and two weeks imprisonment and issued a 10-year restraining order.
She was warned to refrain from reoffending and warned of the consequences if she did so.
