SUSAN RUSSELL'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN SHEFFIELD FLAT LEAVES PETS SUFFERING

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community in Sheffield, Susan Clair Russell, born on 18 March 1983 and residing at 4 Mather Walk, Darnall, was found guilty of severe animal neglect involving five pets, including four cats and a dog. The animals were discovered living in deplorable conditions that were described as uninhabitable, with their owner having ignored multiple warnings from the RSPCA to improve the living environment.

Authorities uncovered the extent of the neglect after inspectors Vanessa Reid and Kim Greaves visited Russell’s first-floor flat in Mather Walk on May 4, 2023. Their purpose was to verify whether she had complied with an improvement notice issued previously. Upon arrival, the inspectors observed a scene of utter chaos and filth. The curtains in the flat were filthy, and the balcony was cluttered with belongings and rubbish, indicating that little to no effort had been made to address the concerns raised earlier. Despite attempts to contact housing officers for an update, there was no response, and the inspectors returned the following day, this time gaining entry to the property with the help of a neighbor.

Inside, the scene was even more disturbing. Rubbish, faeces, mouldy food, and containers were strewn across every surface, creating an environment that was described as ‘unfit for humans or animals’. The flat was filled with a foul odour so strong that a police officer present during the inspection was unable to remain inside due to nausea. The animals, which included a small chihuahua named Shadow and four cats, were found living amidst the squalor. The dog was suffering from a severe skin disease that had caused hair loss in multiple areas, and all four cats were infested with fleas.

Further investigations revealed that the animals had been subjected to prolonged neglect. Shadow’s skin condition was particularly severe, with widespread alopecia affecting his ears, belly, armpits, hind limbs, and tail, accompanied by erythema and flea dirt visible on his skin and remaining coat. The vet who examined the animals confirmed that their living conditions had been detrimental to their health and welfare. The vet’s written statement highlighted that Shadow’s skin disease had been left untreated, causing him unnecessary suffering. The environment was deemed absolutely unfit for the habitation of pets, exposing them to danger and neglecting their basic needs.

Initially, Russell was not present at the flat, and other individuals present refused to allow the animals to be taken for veterinary care. However, in a subsequent visit with police, Russell was present, and authorities explained that the pets were being removed due to her failure to address the warnings and improve their living conditions. The vet’s examination confirmed the extent of the neglect, and photographs taken inside the flat depicted a scene of extreme squalor.

During court proceedings, Russell’s solicitor acknowledged the severity of the situation, emphasizing that the property was unsuitable for human habitation and that something had gone ‘catastrophically wrong’. It was also noted that Russell was suffering from poor mental health and complex health issues, which elicited some sympathy from the court. She had previously been served a notice by the local council to clean the property, which she had partially addressed.

The magistrates determined that the case’s seriousness and the prolonged neglect warranted a custodial sentence. Russell was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, along with 15 days of rehabilitation. She was also ordered to pay costs of £400 and a victim surcharge of £154. Additionally, she received a ten-year ban on keeping animals, although she has the right to contest this after five years, with the ban set to expire in August 2034.

Following the case, the rescued animals were placed in the care of the RSPCA’s branches in Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster, and Rotherham. Inspector Reid commented on the case, stating, “The conditions at the flat were appalling and clearly unfit for both humans and animals to be living in, yet the owner failed to heed warnings and take action. We’re pleased these animals are no longer in that environment and can now look forward to starting afresh in new homes.”
