STUART MAY FROM RATCLIFFE CULEY JAILED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN WEST MIDLANDS AND BIRMINGHAM

In a case that has shocked the local community and brought to light disturbing acts from decades past, Stuart May, a former scout leader from Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield, has been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing young boys during the 1970s. The investigation into May’s actions was initiated after a victim came forward, revealing that he had been subjected to abuse by May when he was just 12 or 13 years old. This initial disclosure prompted authorities to delve deeper into the case, leading to the identification of additional victims.

West Midlands Police launched a comprehensive investigation following the first victim’s report. As the inquiry progressed, officers uncovered evidence pointing to a second victim, who confirmed that he had been abused between the ages of ten and thirteen. Further inquiries, including a review of records maintained by the Scout Association, enabled police to trace two more victims, all of whom had been targeted by May during their childhood. The victims recounted that the abuse took place in various settings, including May’s car, during trips, and within a Scout hut. It was noted that these acts often occurred in the presence of other boys, adding a layer of betrayal and exploitation to the crimes.

Stuart May, now aged 79 and residing on Sketchley Lane in Ratcliffe Culey, Leicestershire, initially denied any involvement in the allegations. However, during a court hearing at Birmingham Crown Court on June 15, he admitted to eight counts of gross indecency with a boy under 14, as well as three counts of inciting a boy under 14 to commit acts of gross indecency. His admission marked a significant development in the case, which culminated in his sentencing on Thursday, July 13.

May was sentenced to a total of eight years and nine months in prison. Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, a measure designed to monitor and prevent further offenses. The case has left a lasting impact on the victims and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding children and holding perpetrators accountable, regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes occurred.
