STUART JONES FROM OLDHAM SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND WEAPONS INCIDENT
In a case that has shocked the community of Oldham, Stuart Jones, aged 54, has been sentenced to a total of three years in prison after being found guilty of historic sexual offences committed against a young girl.The offences, which took place in August 2001, involved indecent assault and acts of indecency with a child, and were brought to light after a lengthy investigation and a subsequent trial at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court.
Jones's arrest occurred earlier in April 2016, when he was found intoxicated at the Tommyfield pub in Oldham.
Witnesses reported that he was heavily drunk and was carrying a Samurai sword and a knife, which he claimed were ornamental.
The incident caused concern among patrons and prompted police intervention.
Jones's behavior that day was described as erratic, and he was taken into custody for possession of offensive weapons and public intoxication.
The court proceedings revealed that the sexual offences against the young girl, who was only nine years old at the time, had been committed within a matter of hours.
The victim, who later suffered from severe depression and mental health issues, did not report the abuse until more than a decade later.
Prosecutor Shirley Duckworth detailed how the girl had endured significant emotional trauma, describing her as having lost confidence both mentally and physically.
She explained that the girl now struggles with trust issues, especially towards men, as a direct result of the abuse.
Jones was convicted by a jury following a trial in April, where evidence was presented that linked him to the offences.
Despite his conviction, Jones maintains his innocence.
During sentencing, Judge Maurice Greene addressed Jones directly, stating, “You were clearly going through a bad patch, but you used this girl for your own ends.” The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offences, noting that they warranted immediate custody despite Jones's plea for leniency.
Defense lawyer Caroline Patrick argued that Jones's actions in 2001 were isolated incidents, occurring during a period when he was struggling with personal issues, including a marriage breakdown, depression, and alcohol abuse.
She highlighted that there was no pattern of similar behaviour and that his conduct was out of character.
In addition to the sexual offences, the court considered the weapons incident.
On April 4, 2016, Jones had been drinking heavily at the Tommyfield pub before leaving and returning shortly afterward, visibly intoxicated and armed with the ornamental sword and knife.
Judge Greene acknowledged that Jones was not threatening anyone with the weapons but stressed that the incident was serious due to the dangerous nature of the items and his intoxicated state.
Ultimately, Jones was sentenced to three years in prison for the indecent assault.
He received a concurrent six-month sentence for indecency with a child, a two-month sentence for possession of offensive weapons, and an additional seven days for failing to attend his original sentencing hearing the previous week.
The case has left a lasting impact on the Oldham community, highlighting the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and the consequences of reckless behavior involving weapons and alcohol.
