STUART GREENER SENTENCED TO EXTRA EIGHT YEARS IN SUNDERLAND FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES

In July 2014, Stuart Greener, a convicted rapist serving a life sentence for attacking a woman, received an additional eight years in prison after admitting to sex offenses involving children.

Greener, who lived in Ryhope and Murton/Sunderland during the 1960s and 70s, was originally sentenced to life imprisonment in 2011, as reported by Durham Crown Court. The offences he admitted to occurred in Suffolk, where he was employed as a builder.

Further allegations emerged of sexual abuse in the 1970s against two boys in the North East. Prosecutor Sarah Mallett explained, “Greener would have been between 14 and about 19 years,” and he forced the boys to perform sex acts on him multiple times. She added, “They both say he ruined their childhood, which has caused difficulties at home and school. One of the victims turned to criminality as an adult, partly blaming Greener for his problems.”

Greener, now 56 and described in court as having no fixed address, admitted to seven charges of indecent assault against a child. It was also revealed he has a prior conviction for rape in 1996, for which he served five years. “In that offence, he took the woman to a wooded area in his car and raped her,” Ms. Mallett stated.

Defense lawyer Richard Wood highlighted that Greener had experienced abuse himself as a child and linked this to his offending, saying, “Mr. Greener has some insight into the impact of his actions. At the time, he struggled to tell right from wrong and is now seeking help from prison authorities.”

Judge Brian Forster QC sentenced Greener to a further eight years in prison, commenting, “You took advantage of these two boys multiple times for your sexual pleasure. They were frightened and believed your threats about what would happen if they reported you. While I consider your current circumstances, under today’s guidelines, this sentence would have been considerably longer.”

As Greener is a life prisoner, the sentence is to run immediately, and he cannot be considered for parole until 2021. The judge also ordered a transcript of the case to be forwarded to the Parole Board.

Earlier, in November 2011, Greener was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted at Ipswich Crown Court for the rape of two women and multiple sexual assaults, including repeated offenses against a girl who was just a schoolgirl. The jury found him guilty of nine charges of rape and three of indecent assault, acquitting him of one other count.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, recounted her suffering, explaining, “My self-worth has been next to nothing,” and described how she became reclusive due to her fear of Greener. She revealed she only reported the abuse years later, after confiding in her mother.

Greener denied any inappropriate conduct during his trial, asserting that allegations of drugging and intoxication were false. Judge John Devaux sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum of 10 years before parole eligibility, and he ordered Greener to register as a sex offender for life. The court also accounted for 404 days already served in custody.

Suffolk Police's Detective Inspector David Rutterford praised the victims’ bravery and emphasized the importance of reporting sexual offenses, regardless of when they occurred. He assured that all reports are thoroughly investigated and assured that justice is a priority, reinforcing that sex offenders cannot evade consequences simply due to the passage of time.
