STEWARD PEARCE PLEADS GUILTY IN PLYMOUTH CHILD SEX CASE AND IS SENTENCED
In May 2014, Stewart Pearce, a 28-year-old man from Plymouth, was convicted and sentenced to six years in prison for engaging in repeated sexual activities with a young girl.The case was heard at Plymouth Crown Court, where the victim, a minor whose identity remains protected by law, bravely testified about her distressing experiences.
According to court proceedings, Pearce had a known relationship with the girl, which he initially denied having engaged in any sexual conduct.
Despite his claims of innocence, the jury found him guilty on all six counts of sexual activity with a child, after deliberating for five hours.
The charges stemmed from incidents that took place in 2011 and 2012, with the court describing these as representative of a pattern of abuse rather than isolated events.
During the trial, the young victim recounted her feelings of shame and disgust, describing her relationship with Pearce as deeply troubling.
She was compelled to give evidence in both trials, revealing that she had kept her ordeal secret out of fear, as Pearce had threatened her with consequences if she disclosed the abuse.
It was only after she confided in her family that police were contacted, leading to Pearce’s arrest.
Judge Philip Wassall addressed Pearce directly, emphasizing the severity of his actions.
He stated, “There was no element of affection or love as far as you were concerned.
It was just sexual abuse.” The judge further noted that Pearce had engaged in sexual activity with the girl at least 16 times, highlighting the predatory nature of his conduct.
The court also heard that the six charges presented were examples of a broader pattern of offending.
Defense lawyer Rupert Taylor argued that Pearce’s offenses were not sophisticated and pointed out that he had no prior convictions and had not been in trouble since his arrest.
Taylor expressed regret over the case, describing Pearce’s actions as a failure to act responsibly as an adult and emphasizing that no one would benefit from the situation.
In addition to his prison sentence, Pearce was handed a ten-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order.
This order prohibits him from residing in a household with a child under 16 and from having contact with anyone below that age.
Pearce, who is currently unemployed, is also required to register as a sex offender.
By May 2017, Pearce had been released from prison but was not residing in Plymouth at that time, indicating a possible move or relocation following his release.
The case remains a stark reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable minors from exploitation and abuse, and the court’s actions underscore the seriousness with which such offenses are treated in the justice system.
