HORRIFIC CRIME: STEVEN SMITH OF HULL SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE
In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community of Hull, Steven Smith, a 26-year-old man with no fixed address, has been convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual assault of two young children. The court proceedings, held at Hull Crown Court, culminated in a verdict that has left many in the city appalled and seeking justice for the victims.
Smith was found guilty on two counts of raping children under the age of 13.
The first victim, a child under ten years old, was lured into Smith's bed where he committed the act of rape.
The second victim, who was less than five years old, was subjected to forced oral sex by Smith.
These acts of unimaginable cruelty and predation have brought to light the disturbing extent of Smith's offenses.
During the trial, the court was filled with a mixture of shock and outrage from the public gallery, which erupted into cheers when the jury announced the guilty verdicts on both charges.
The case was particularly distressing because Smith forced the youngest of his victims to testify in court, a move that deeply upset the child's mother.
Her emotional impact statement was read aloud by prosecutor Claire Holmes, revealing the profound effect the crimes have had on her family.
In her statement, the mother expressed her heartbreak, stating, “I feel with all my children, I have lost a year of their lives.” She also praised her child's resilience, saying, “I am extremely proud of the strength (my child) has shown throughout this whole process.” The case has left a lasting scar on the community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable children.
Judge Mark Bury, presiding over the case, sentenced Smith to a term of 16 years in prison.
In his remarks, the judge emphasized the severity of the crimes, noting, “You committed a much more serious rape of a child.
From first to last, the victim has said that you did that.” The judge also acknowledged the emotional toll on the young victim and their family, particularly noting the distress caused by Smith forcing the child to give evidence in court.
Smith's sentence includes a minimum of half of the term to be served before he becomes eligible for release on licence, which will be for an additional 12 months.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against child abuse and the importance of swift justice for victims in Hull and beyond.
