WARRINGTON PAEDOPHILE STEVEN SMITH CAUGHT IN PREDATOR STING AT CRONTON PARK
A disturbing case involving a 52-year-old man named Steven Smith from Warrington has come to light after he was caught attempting to meet what he believed to be underage girls in a park in Cronton. The incident was orchestrated by a vigilant paedophile hunting group based in Widnes, known as Widnes Parents Against Predators, who successfully detained Smith before any harm could occur.
Smith had been engaging in online conversations with what he thought were teenage girls, expressing a desire to kiss, cuddle, and date them.
He also encouraged these young girls to perform sex acts on themselves, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.
The police were alerted in May of the previous year when members of the Widnes-based group reported that they had detained a man who was attempting to meet a girl he believed to be 14 years old at a park in Cronton.
Following the report, officers from Liverpool Crown Court arrested Smith at his residence on Rylands Drive, Orford.
During the subsequent search of his devices, authorities uncovered evidence that he had been communicating with multiple young girls online, some of whom may have been decoys operated by the vigilant group.
One such girl was identified as Imogen, who claimed to be 14 years old.
However, law enforcement officials could not confirm whether Imogen was a real child or a decoy.
Despite Imogen’s assertion of her age, Smith’s conversations with her quickly turned sexual in nature.
He asked her for pictures and encouraged her to perform sex acts on herself.
He also expressed a desire to watch TV, eat curry, and cuddle with her, and asked if she would like to kiss him, describing the act as 'special' and 'electric.' Smith even mentioned the possibility of buying her a gift for her 15th birthday because he 'liked her.' These conversations spanned from April 2022 to December 2022 and only ceased when Imogen stopped responding.
Another girl, named Molly, was also targeted by Smith.
However, this account was a decoy operated by Widnes Parents Against Predators.
Smith first contacted Molly in April 2023, believing her to be 14.
She confirmed her age, and Smith responded by calling her 'stunning' and asking her to send a picture.
He then discussed meeting up, suggesting they go for a walk, kiss, and cuddle.
He also expressed a desire to caress her and run his hands over her body, despite acknowledging she was too young for sex.
Smith encouraged Molly to perform sex acts on herself as well.
In May 2023, Smith told Molly he was working in St Helens and proposed they meet at a park in Cronton.
However, he was intercepted and detained by the paedophile hunting group before the meeting could take place.
Additionally, between March and May 2023, Smith engaged with another decoy account posing as a girl named Megan, also aged 14.
Their conversations were sexualized, with Smith expressing interest in going for a curry, getting a kiss for his birthday, and going on a date to McDonald's.
He asked Megan to send a picture of her bed, implying intimacy, and sent voice notes discussing kissing and grabbing her bottom.
Throughout these interactions, Smith showed no previous criminal convictions.
His defense lawyer, Jim Smith, expressed that his client felt a 'high level of regret' for his actions.
He highlighted that since his arrest, Smith had taken steps toward rehabilitation, including self-referral for psychological therapy and attending Sex Addicts Anonymous, where he has become a sponsor.
The lawyer also noted that Smith suffers from anxiety and depression, and that he has lost his marriage, career, and home since committing these offenses.
Judge David Potter sentenced Smith to three years and four months in prison.
Additionally, he imposed a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and ordered Smith to register as a sex offender, emphasizing the seriousness of his crimes and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community from further harm.
