IRVINE RAPIST STEVEN MAYS SENTENCED IN GLASGOW AND KILMARNOCK FOR SEX OFFENCES AND ONLINE HARASSMENT

In a recent series of legal proceedings, Steven Mays, a man from Irvine, has faced multiple convictions related to serious sexual offences and online harassment, leading to extended prison sentences and registration as a sex offender.

Last week, Mays was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow after being convicted of a total of 14 charges involving eight different women. The charges included rape and domestic violence, with evidence revealing that some victims were pregnant at the time of his assaults. The judge, Lord Matthews, described Mays as a “serial offender” and emphasized the severity of his actions, which constituted a “campaign of physical and sexual violence.”

Following his conviction, Mays was initially sentenced to nine years in prison. However, the court later extended his incarceration, with Lord Matthews imposing a total sentence of eight years and eight months. Despite this, Mays still had an unresolved case at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, where he appeared on Monday, March 21, after admitting to breaching his community payback order. This breach was related to his failure to comply with the terms of his supervision.

It is noteworthy that Mays, who previously resided on Whitewisp Crescent, had a history of avoiding jail time for less severe offences. In 2012, he was convicted of sending lewd messages to a 12-year-old girl via Facebook. Instead of imprisonment, he was sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work and three years of supervision. However, he later breached this order following his arrest in connection with the more serious offences.

During the hearing, Mays’s defense solicitor, Colin McLaughlin, informed Sheriff Derek Livingston that his client had completed half of his unpaid work and was in compliance with supervision. Nonetheless, the sheriff sentenced Mays to an additional three months in prison for breaching the order.

In a separate incident dating back to August 2014, Mays was involved in sending obscene Facebook messages to a young girl. He asked her if she knew the meaning of a lewd act and then begged her to perform it on him. The girl, distressed by the messages, blocked Mays and confided in her mother, revealing that the messages were stored on her laptop. Her mother then logged onto the account, and Mays, under the guise of the girl, sent a depraved comment. Although he denied the charges, Mays was found guilty at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, with sentencing deferred for further reports.

Additionally, Mays was convicted of domestic harassment against another woman, which involved persistent sexual text messages sent while he was on bail. This incident took place in Stewarton between April and November of the previous year. As part of his sentence, Mays was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for three years, received supervision for the same period, and was ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

Further back, in July 2014, Mays was also convicted of sending obscene messages on Facebook to a female victim in Stewarton. The messages, sent between April and November 2013, contained sexual content and were deemed to be intended to cause annoyance and anxiety. He denied the charge but was found guilty at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, with sentencing deferred until August for report preparation. During this period, his name was added to the Sex Offenders Register, reflecting the seriousness of his offences and the ongoing legal consequences he faces.
