SHEFFIELD MAN STEVEN DARBY JAILED FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Sheffield, a local man named Steven Darby has been sentenced to prison after engaging in heinous online activities involving the attempted grooming of a minor and the possession of explicit images of children.According to court proceedings, the incident dates back to late 2015 when Darby, then aged 43, initiated contact with a user under the username Lizzy12UK in a chatroom specifically designed for children aged between 13 and 16 years old.
The chatroom, known as Kids’ Chat, is intended to provide a safe space for young users, but it was exploited by Darby for malicious purposes.
Prosecutor Andrew Smith explained that Darby believed his online contact was a 12-year-old girl.
Shortly after establishing communication, Darby invited her to continue their conversation via Skype.
During these exchanges, he shared explicit images of his face and genitalia, further crossing boundaries of decency.
As the conversation progressed, Darby made increasingly inappropriate sexual remarks, including an invitation for her to come and 'share his bed.' The police operation, known as Operation Rosa, was initiated to combat online grooming and child exploitation.
The undercover officer, posing as the young girl, engaged with Darby as part of this investigation.
Through the email address used for Skype, authorities traced Darby to an address on Crag View Crescent in Oughtibridge, Sheffield.
Following his arrest, law enforcement officers seized Darby’s Toshiba laptop for forensic analysis.
The investigation uncovered nearly 100 indecent images of children stored on his hard drive.
Of these, 23 were classified as Category A, representing the most severe form of child exploitation material.
An additional three images fell into Category B, with the remaining 72 categorized as Category C.
The severity of these images underscores the gravity of Darby’s offenses.
Further forensic examination revealed that Darby had downloaded approximately 2,516 more indecent images, although attempts to recover these files were unsuccessful.
In addition to possession, Darby was found to have distributed four indecent images, one of which depicted a nine-month-old girl being abused—a particularly disturbing detail that highlights the extent of his criminal behavior.
During earlier court hearings, Darby admitted to three counts of producing indecent images of a child, one count of distributing such images, and an additional charge related to attempting to cause or incite a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
Judge Roger Thomas sentenced Darby to two years in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions.
In his remarks, the judge stated, “On first glance, you appear to be an unremarkable man.
You have shown that you have a very dark, evil side to you.” He further added, “The point that needs to be understood is that you were looking at the most terrible of things that were happening somewhere, to real children.
But those things wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t for people like you accessing the resulting images.” The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by online predators and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse, especially within communities like Sheffield where such incidents have now come to light.
