Man jailed for rape of six-year-old girl four decades ago

MAN JAILED FOR RAPE OF SIX-YEAR-OLD GIRL FOUR DECADES AGO

A 'despicable' man has finally been jailed for the 'horrendous' rape of a six-year-old girl more than four decades ago.

Gerard Cain raped the girl when she was just six years old and later touched her sexually.

The abuse only came to light recently when the brave survivor reported it to police.

Cain denied rape and five counts of indecent assault of a child under the age of 14, which date back more than four decades.

However, a jury found him guilty after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court in December.

The 63-year-old, formerly of Moorbank Road, Sheffield, was this week sentenced to six years in prison.

He was also made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a lifetime restraining order.

Detective Sergeant Paul Harbisher, from Durham Police, said: “Cain is a despicable individual who even after all these years thought he could get away with the horrendous crimes he had committed.

I would like to pay tribute to the courage and determination of the survivor in coming forward, this was an incredibly brave step to take.”
