STEVEN CANNING JAILED IN CHANDLER'S FORD FOR BREACHING SEX OFFENCE CONDITIONS
A convicted paedophile who covertly searched for 'teenage porn' using his Xbox has been sentenced to prison.Steven Canning, a 37-year-old registered sex offender from Grayson Court in Chandler’s Ford, was at home when police unexpectedly arrived.
He had previously been found in possession of indecent images of children and extreme pornography.
As a result, he was subject to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).
During an unannounced visit on June 20 this year, officers noticed a white phone charger in his home, which Canning claimed belonged to his partner.
While inspecting the kitchen, they found an EE mobile phone booklet; he denied owning any unregistered devices when asked.
Prosecutor Leigh Hart explained that officers then called the number listed on the booklet, and a phone began ringing from inside a cupboard.
Under the terms of his SHPO, Canning was required to inform police of any internet-enabled devices he owned and present them upon request.
He appeared before Southampton Crown Court on Monday, facing charges of breaching his SHPO and breaching a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 24 months.
Canning pleaded guilty to all charges on June 22.
Another unannounced visit on November 27 last year revealed officers asking Canning about his internet-enabled devices.
He acknowledged owning an Xbox but claimed it was disconnected from the internet, which proved false.
Further investigation showed the console was connected to the internet and had been used to search for 'teenage pornography.' Defence lawyer Keely Harvey stated that Canning was still struggling to find answers, highlighting that he had recently lost his father to lung cancer and was 'down' at that time.
She added that Canning was willing to participate in a rehabilitation programme for men convicted of sexual offences.
Judge Christopher Parker QC commented during sentencing, 'You need help.
You will, I hope, receive it in custody,' and sentenced Canning to 27 months in prison.
