STEVE SUTTON AND HIS SHOCKING CRIMES IN BRISTOL
A grieving mother from Bristol shared an emotional and heart-wrenching statement in court, expressing her deep anguish and despair over the horrific abuse her young daughter endured at the hands of Steve Sutton. She wished fervently that the man she described as a 'monster' who subjected her innocent child to a brutal campaign of sexual violence, which Sutton recorded on video, would be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The proceedings took place at Bristol Crown Court on March 23, 2023, where Sutton, aged 60 and residing in Knowle, was sentenced for a series of appalling crimes.
Once considered an upstanding citizen and an electrical engineer, Sutton’s life took a dark turn when police investigations revealed his involvement in downloading images linked to child sexual abuse, ultimately leading to his guilty plea on multiple serious charges.
His criminal record was marked by 30 separate offences, including the grievous rape of a child.
Among the charges were five counts of raping a child, twelve counts of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13 by penetration, five counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and one count of participating in sexual activity in the presence of a child.
Additionally, Sutton faced three counts related to taking indecent photographs of a child, another three for making such indecent images, and one for possessing extreme pornographic material.
During the sentencing hearing, His Honour Judge Peter Blair KC, the Recorder of Bristol, condemned Sutton’s actions in unambiguous terms.
He sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 13 years before eligibility for parole.
The judge also publicly acknowledged the diligent work of police officers, particularly Detective Constable Fiona Currey and Police Constable Rosie Murrell, whose efforts facilitated the thorough investigation.
To prevent further offending, Sutton was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his activities to protect the community.
Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and was permanently barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.
The prosecuting attorney, Ian Fenny, provided details about the depth of Sutton’s depravity, revealing that he sexually abused his young victim, who was between five and six years old, over a period of approximately eight months.
Sutton’s abuse included violent acts, and he engaged in recording hours of footage during which he tied the child up and subjected her to severe sexual assaults.
Investigators meticulously reviewed this graphic and disturbing material to gather substantial evidence, which contributed to Sutton’s convictions.
As part of her impact statement, the victim’s mother was shielded from the court via a screen while her raw emotion was palpable.
Using a hearing loop, she described Sutton as a 'monster who robbed her child of her innocence.' Fighting back tears, she recounted her shock upon learning of the abuse, describing her feelings of numbness.
She expressed her deep hope that, with ongoing support, her family could eventually find some measure of healing.
She emphasized the lasting scars inflicted upon her daughter and their entire family unit, recognizing how her child’s life had been irreparably changed.
Her words echoed a mixture of pain and resilience as she declared that Sutton’s actions had broken her family in various ways and that her daughter would carry trauma for the rest of her life.
Nevertheless, she stated her belief that her family would not be defeated by Sutton but would grow stronger and recover over time.
Her closing remarks reflected her desire to protect her child from harm and her urgent wish that Sutton realize the damage he had caused.
She poignantly stated, 'I wish I could have protected her from the monster who was abusing her.' In support of Sutton’s case, his defense lawyer, Giles Nelson, highlighted the fact that Sutton had pleaded guilty promptly, avoiding a lengthy trial.
Nelson acknowledged the disturbing nature of the case but asserted that the sentencing should reflect the severity of the crimes committed, in accordance with the guidelines.
This case not only underscores the horrific impact of child sexual abuse but also highlights the relentless efforts of law enforcement in bringing such offenders to justice, and the profound courage of victims and their families in standing up in court to seek justice against predators within the community of Bristol.
