Febuary 2010 ‘Sexual predator’ jailed for six counts of rape – including one under 16 A “SEXUAL predator” was jailed yesterday for six counts of rape, including one of a teenage girl under the age of 16. Stephen Leonard Unwin, 45, was sent down for 13 years after being found guilty by trial last month. Unwin, of Powell Road, Buckley, was arrested in April 2008 by officers from North Wales police’s central public protection unit. Yesterday Mold Crown Court heard Unwin was also found guilty of three counts of indecent assault on a female, earning him a concurrent nine year sentence. Judge Philip Hughes also handed the serial sex offender a swathe of sentences, to be served alongside the 13-year term for rape, for 12 counts of possessing child porn. The court heard the content of the child porn ranged from level one – the least serious form of image – to level five, the most serious, which can cover sadism. Detective Inspector Jo Williams said: “Stephen Unwin is a predator. The offences which he committed against innocent victims over a significant period of time were terrible. “The sentence is a reflection of the serious nature of these offences.” The successful prosecution followed a sensitive, protracted and detailed investigation, with North Wales Police working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service. The case in its entirety was heard at Caernarfon Crown Court in January this year where Unwin was unanimously found guilty of 12 offences of indecent assault, rape and possession of indecent images and videos of children. Unwin must now be registered as a sex offender.
