STEPHEN SWANTON FROM UCKFIELD AND PEVENSEY SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENCY IMAGES IN SUSSEX

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Sussex community, Stephen Swanton, a 52-year-old man formerly residing in Uckfield and with ties to Pevensey, has been sentenced after admitting to serious offences involving indecent images of children. The proceedings took place at Lewes Crown Court, where Swanton appeared to face the consequences of his actions that have raised concerns about online safety and the exploitation of minors.

Swanton, who was previously employed as a driver and administrative worker for Sussex Police, was found guilty of possessing and creating indecent images of children. His guilty plea covered nine separate charges, including some of the most severe categories of such images, as well as possession of a prohibited image of a child and two counts of possessing extreme adult images. These offences were committed while he was off duty, at his former residence in Uckfield, using his personal computer equipment. Importantly, there was no evidence suggesting any contact with children, either online or in person, nor any connection between his employment and the offences.

During the court hearing on September 11, Swanton was sentenced to 20 months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years. Additionally, he was placed under a two-year supervision order following his release, which will require him to adhere to certain conditions and regular monitoring. The court also imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his access to computers and online devices until further notice, aiming to prevent any future offending. Swanton is also mandated to participate in a sex offender treatment program, reflecting the court’s concern for public safety and rehabilitation.

As part of the court’s rulings, all computer equipment seized during the investigation was ordered to be destroyed. The investigation was led by the Sussex Police’s Paedophile Online Investigation Team, following intelligence that prompted the police to act swiftly. Swanton was arrested in April 2014 at his previous address on Nevill Road in Uckfield. He has since moved to Linkway, Westham. Authorities confirmed that there is no evidence linking the images to local children, and no contact offences have been identified.

Swanton’s employment history with Sussex Police ended in June 2014 when he was dismissed for gross misconduct, a consequence of his arrest and subsequent charges. It is important to note that he was not a police officer, but a civilian staff member. His offences occurred entirely outside of his work duties and did not involve any interaction with children through his employment. The case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from harm, while also emphasizing the importance of vigilance and community safety in Sussex.
