WIDNES PAEDOPHILE STEPHEN ST CLAIR SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS FOR ABUSE AND SEXUAL OFFENCES
In a case that has shocked the community of Widnes, Stephen St Clair, aged 55, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after being found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offences. The conviction was handed down at Chester Crown Court on a recent Friday, following a comprehensive four-day trial that revealed the extent of his disturbing criminal behavior.St Clair, a resident of Eric Street in Widnes, faced a jury charged with 11 counts, including sexual assault and incitement to commit a sex act. The court heard harrowing details of how he repeatedly targeted a young girl, who was under the age of 12, during a period of several years. The jury was informed that St Clair exploited moments when no other adults were present to carry out his sickening acts, which included a range of sexual abuses that left the victim traumatized.
The victim, who chose to remain anonymous, endured years of silence out of fear. She was terrified of her abuser, who had threatened to kill her if she ever disclosed his actions. Her suffering was compounded when she attempted to confide in a woman about her ordeal, only to be met with a dismissive response: “what do you care?” This response further silenced her, deepening her sense of helplessness.
During the trial, the victim provided a poignant video statement to the court, describing her experience: “He battered me. I was scared of him. I was cared for… I’m scared of him still.” Her testimony was supported by other witnesses, one of whom recounted how St Clair was aggressive, drank alcohol nightly, and once held a gun to her head, threatening to shoot her. These accounts painted a picture of a man with a violent and threatening demeanor.
It was only after the victim confided in trusted friends that she found the courage to report her abuse to the police. One friend, upon learning of her ordeal, confronted St Clair directly in a pub, boldly declaring, “I know what you’ve done.” The victim’s relatives noted changes in her behavior during the period of abuse, and she herself admitted to suffering mental health issues as a consequence. She expressed ongoing fears of adult men, which continue to affect her life.
Judge Nicholas Woodward, who presided over the case, summarized the severity of St Clair’s criminal history, revealing that he had accumulated 23 previous convictions spanning 53 offences since the 1970s. These included serious crimes such as using a firearm during an attempted arrest, robbery, theft, burglary, possession of a firearm, assaulting a police officer, and being drunk and disorderly. The judge described St Clair as a “tyrant” and condemned his abuse of his position of trust to satisfy his sexual urges, noting that his behavior escalated from touching to more serious acts, leaving the young girl terrified.
St Clair maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, denying the charges, although he did admit to owning a BB gun. The jury acquitted him of one count related to that possession. The court’s verdict underscores the gravity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victim, who now faces a future marked by the trauma inflicted by her abuser.
