STEPHEN SMITH FROM GLASGOW AND LEEDS CONVICTED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE INVOLVING YOUNG RANGERS MASCOT
In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Glasgow and Leeds, Stephen Smith, aged 59, faced justice in the High Court in Glasgow after admitting to a series of heinous crimes involving a young girl who was a mascot at a Rangers football match.Smith was a frequent visitor to Glasgow, often traveling from Leeds to watch Rangers play at Ibrox Stadium.
During these visits, he developed a disturbing pattern of abusing a young girl, who was only eight years old when the abuse began.
The girl, who had been chosen as a matchday mascot in 2010, was subjected to repeated assaults by Smith over a period spanning from 2007 to 2011.
These incidents took place during Smith’s stays at various hotels in Glasgow, where he exploited the child's trust and innocence.
The court heard that the young girl’s involvement as a mascot was a moment of pride for her, but it was tragically overshadowed by Smith’s predatory behavior.
The abuse was uncovered during a comprehensive investigation into Smith’s activities, which eventually led to his arrest.
During police interviews, Smith expressed remorse, describing his actions as “a bloody idiot,” a stark admission that underscored the gravity of his misconduct.
Smith’s criminal record includes a previous conviction for child sex abuse, for which he was sentenced to ten years and eight months at Leeds Crown Court in 2012.
Despite this, he continued to commit offenses against vulnerable children, leading to his current trial and sentencing.
At the hearing, Smith pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including rape, lewd and libidinous behavior, and the possession of indecent photographs.
The judge, Lady Scott, condemned his actions as “serious sexual abuse of a young child,” emphasizing the severity of the crimes.
In her sentencing, Lady Scott imposed a term of five years and six months in prison.
This sentence is to run concurrently with his previous sentence from Leeds, meaning he will serve the combined time for his offenses.
