STEPHEN PHILLIPS SENTENCED IN CARDIFF FOR DECADES-OLD SEXUAL ABUSE OF VICTIM
In October 2021, a harrowing case involving a man from Cardiff who committed heinous acts of sexual abuse against a young girl was brought to a close in Newport Crown Court. The perpetrator, Stephen Phillips, aged 60 and residing on Addicott Close in Caerau, was found guilty of multiple serious charges related to the abuse that occurred over two decades ago.
During the trial, it was revealed that Phillips had subjected his young victim, who was under 16 at the time, to a series of disturbing and predatory acts.
The court heard that Phillips initially exposed himself to the girl, an act that marked the beginning of a pattern of escalating abuse.
He then forced her to perform sexual acts on him, including masturbation, and indecently touched her on several occasions.
The abuse culminated in Phillips raping her three times, during which he also supplied her with cannabis on two separate occasions to manipulate her compliance.
Throughout the proceedings, Phillips denied all allegations, claiming innocence.
However, the jury rejected his account, returning guilty verdicts on 11 counts of sexual offences, including rape, indecent assault, and gross indecency with a child.
The severity of the crimes and the impact on the victim were emphasized during the sentencing hearing.
The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, delivered a heartfelt personal statement read aloud in court.
She described how the abuse had robbed her of her childhood and left lasting scars.
She explained that even after 20 years, she continues to suffer from nightmares and a persistent sense of insecurity.
The victim expressed her frustration and anger, stating, "It has taken a long time for me to talk about it...
I am so angry he did this to me and forced me to live with this.
He’s taken a part of me I can’t get back." She recounted feeling trapped in a state of limbo, as if time had stood still while Phillips continued his abuse without consequence.
She further shared that it was only after many years that she realized the abuse was not her fault, and that speaking out was a crucial step toward healing.
"Only now I have spoken out do I feel like I may be able to get some closure," she said.
Her statement reflected a mixture of pain and hope, as she expressed her desire to move forward and live her life free from the shadows of her past.
"This will always be part of me now but now I feel like I will be able to start living my life instead of being stuck in a dark place with those dark clouds hanging over me," she concluded.
Judge Daniel Williams, presiding over the case, acknowledged the profound impact of Phillips' actions on the victim.
He stated, "The effect upon [the victim] has been very great and she has been left in essence untrusting, angry, and distressed." In light of the evidence and the gravity of the offences, Phillips was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison.
Additionally, he was placed under an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, ensuring ongoing restrictions to protect the public from potential future harm.
The court's decision underscores the seriousness with which such crimes are treated and the commitment to justice for victims of sexual abuse.
