STEPHEN MURPHY FROM LISBURN SENTENCED AFTER PAEDOPHILE HUNTER GROUP EXPOSES HIM IN NORTHERN IRELAND

In December 2020, a man from Lisburn named Stephen Murphy was brought to justice after being caught in a sting operation conducted by a vigilant paedophile hunter group in Northern Ireland. Murphy, aged 47, was found guilty of attempting to groom a minor and was subsequently sentenced to four months in prison. However, due to the time he had already spent in custody since his arrest, he was released shortly after the sentencing.

During the hearing at Lisburn Magistrates Court on a Thursday, District Judge Rosie Watters addressed the case, noting that the maximum sentence available for attempted child grooming under the current legislation was six months. She expressed her belief that cases involving child grooming should be transferred to the Crown Court, which has the authority to impose harsher penalties, up to ten years in prison. Unfortunately, due to recent legislative changes, the magistrates' court was limited in the sentencing options available, and Judge Watters clarified that her hands were tied in this instance.

Murphy, who resides on Killaney Avenue in Lisburn, had previously admitted to attempting to sexually groom a child on July 27 of the same year. He was also charged with attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor, although this particular charge was left on the court record and not pursued further at this stage.

The charges against Murphy emerged after he was confronted by a group called Parents Against Paedophiles NI. This organization is known for its efforts to expose individuals suspected of predatory behavior towards children. A video recording of Murphy being questioned inside his home by members of this group has gained significant attention online, with over 200,000 views.

According to court proceedings, police were alerted to Murphy’s activities after a member of the group posed as a 15-year-old boy and exchanged messages with him. During these exchanges, Murphy sent an explicit image of his genitals and made arrangements for what he believed was a minor to visit his residence for sexual activity. The court heard that Murphy’s actions were captured on video and that he later admitted to the police that he had sent indecent images of himself and expressed confusion about his own motives, stating he “didn’t know what he was thinking.”

Following his arrest, Murphy revealed that he had recently separated from his partner and child, and he is now unable to return to Lisburn. As part of his sentence, District Judge Rosie Watters ordered Murphy to register as a sex offender for seven years and imposed a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order to restrict his activities and protect the community from potential harm.
