STEPHEN ALLEN FROM DUBLIN SENTENCED FOR ABUSING BOYS AT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS SCHOOL
In a case that has resurfaced painful memories from decades past, Stephen Allen, a 77-year-old member of the Christian Brothers based in Dublin, has been sentenced to a single year in prison for the sexual abuse of four boys. The abuse took place over a period spanning from 1961 to 1964, when the victims were students at an industrial school operated by the Christian Brothers.Allen, who resides at the Christian Brothers Provincial on Griffith Avenue in Marino, Dublin, faced the court after pleading guilty in February to 21 counts of sexual assault. His admission of guilt marked a significant development in a case that had been under investigation for years, bringing to light the long-standing issues of abuse within religious institutions.
During police interviews, Stephen Allen described the acts as “an affection that went out of control,” a statement that has been met with widespread criticism and disbelief given the severity of the allegations. The court heard that Allen’s actions had caused lasting trauma to the victims, whose identities remain protected under legal confidentiality.
Judge Frank O’Donnell presided over the case and commented on Allen’s attitude during sentencing. He noted that Allen “didn’t recognise his own culpability,” a factor that the judge said “garners little sympathy.” The judge emphasized the importance of accountability and the need for justice in cases involving abuse, especially when committed by individuals in positions of trust and authority within religious communities.
The sentencing has reignited discussions about the handling of abuse cases within the Catholic Church and other religious organizations in Dublin and beyond. It also highlights the ongoing struggles faced by survivors seeking justice and acknowledgment for the suffering endured decades ago.
