SOPHIE SKINNER FROM LLANFOIST JAILED FOR FALSIFYING RAPE CLAIM IN NEWPORT

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Sophie Skinner, a woman from Llanfoist, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being convicted of perverting the course of justice. The conviction followed two separate crown court trials earlier this year, highlighting the serious consequences of false allegations and their impact on genuine victims of sexual assault.

It all began in June 2016 at a Wetherspoon pub in Abergavenny, where Skinner was seen on CCTV footage acting in a manner that suggested she was seeking attention. During her time at the pub, she encountered Damon Osborne, an 18-year-old at the time, along with his friend. The three engaged in conversation, and later that evening, Skinner crossed paths with Mr. Osborne again while he was waiting for a lift home.

During their interaction, Skinner asked Mr. Osborne if he wanted to have sex with her. He agreed, and the two proceeded to a nearby toilet, where CCTV footage clearly captured Skinner initiating sexual activity. However, when Mr. Osborne declined her request to become her official partner, citing that he already had a girlfriend, Skinner allegedly warned him that she could get him into “trouble.”

Following this, Skinner was seen on CCTV at another bar, where she appeared to be seeking attention from others. She then returned to the Wetherspoon pub and falsely accused Mr. Osborne of rape, claiming he had assaulted her. This false allegation led to Mr. Osborne being detained by police, subjected to a 17-hour period in custody, and undergoing medical examinations that he described as “embarrassing.”

In a victim impact statement read out in court, Mr. Osborne expressed the profound disruption caused by the false accusations. He explained that the incident had turned his life upside down, affecting his employment and social relationships. He revealed that he was unable to work certain hours due to a curfew imposed while on bail, which led to his employer no longer requiring his services. Despite maintaining his innocence, Mr. Osborne admitted to feeling ashamed of his actions with Skinner but emphasized that he did not expect to be accused of rape, as their encounter was consensual.

The court heard that Skinner’s false claim had a “dreadful” effect on her victim, with the judge, Daniel Williams, condemning her actions. The judge acknowledged that police had acted commendably in dropping Skinner’s complaint shortly after it was made and emphasized the importance of prosecuting her for her lies. He pointed out that her false allegations could undermine public confidence in genuine rape victims and stressed that such actions have insidious consequences.

Judge Williams stated, “When Mr. Osborne gave in to your persistent demands for sex, you said you could get him into trouble for having sex with you. CCTV footage could not have been clearer. You initiated sex with him. Rape is a repulsive act. Victims of rape should be treated with every possible consideration by the justice system. But equally, a false allegation can have dreadful consequences.”

Sophie Skinner, residing on Woodland Crescent in Llanfoist, Monmouthshire, was found to have no remorse or victim empathy during the proceedings. Her actions not only caused significant distress to Mr. Osborne but also posed a broader threat to the integrity of the justice system. The court’s decision to imprison her for 18 months underscores the seriousness with which such misconduct is regarded in the legal system.
