SOL BARRETT AND HIS REPREHENSIBLE CRIMES IN CRAWLEY

A man identified as Sol Barrett has been convicted and sentenced to prison for a series of heinous crimes committed in Crawley. The case involves the disturbing assault and rape of a teenage girl, as well as other troubling behaviors that prompted a thorough investigation by local authorities.

The incident began when the victim, whose identity cannot be disclosed for legal reasons, experienced a separate assault on June 17, 2022. Following this attack, she sustained injuries so severe that she required medical attention at a hospital. The trauma she endured marked a dark chapter in her life, and the incident left her with physical and emotional scars.

The following morning, Barrett, 24 years old and residing on Halley Close in Crawley, was found with the girl at his residence. Unaware of her identity and circumstances, Barrett took her back to his home. It was during this period that he committed an act of grave sexual violence, raping her while she was vulnerable and incapable of consent. The victim woke up the next morning at Barrett’s address, with no memory of who he was or how she had come to be there, highlighting the resilience she showed in the face of such trauma.

Further investigations revealed alarming behavior by Barrett beyond this assault. Approximately six months later, concern was raised by the mother of another girl, who similarly could not be named due to legal restrictions. She reported her worries that her daughter was being groomed online by Barrett through Snapchat. Evidence from the messaging platform uncovered that Barrett had lied about his age to manipulate the girl, although she had informed him of her own age. These interactions demonstrated Barrett’s manipulative tactics to engage with minors and exploit their trust.

In court proceedings held on August 7 at Lewes Crown Court, Barrett formally pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges. He was convicted of rape and also faced three counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a child. The court sentenced him to a total of seven years and two months for the rape, with an additional six months for the other charges. These sentences are to be served consecutively and will be on license for a cumulative period of 14 years.

As a consequence of his crimes, Barrett was also declared a lifelong registered sex offender and was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for 15 years. These measures are designed to monitor and restrict his activities to protect the community from further harm.

Commenting on the case, Detective Sergeant Ellen Jones emphasized the bravery of the victims who reported the offenses. She praised their courage and the support provided by specially trained officers. Jones highlighted the importance of thorough investigations in bringing offenders like Barrett to justice, reaffirming commitments to safeguarding vulnerable individuals and ensuring that dangerous individuals are confined to prevent further criminal conduct.
