SIMON THORNTON OF BORDEN AND GODALMING SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES

This marked a significant development in the case, as he had already admitted to 16 charges during a court hearing on May 8 at Guildford Crown Court.

The court heard that Thornton, who resided on Abraham Way in Borden, Hampshire, had engaged in a pattern of predatory behavior, seizing every opportunity to commit sexual acts with the young girl. Evidence presented indicated that he used a secret code to signal his intentions, which he then carried out in various locations, including his van, a local butcher’s shop, and even in public on a nearby common.

Thornton’s resignation from his position at the Godalming Town Council was announced in November 2017, citing “personal reasons” for stepping down. The court proceedings revealed the extent of his misconduct and the betrayal of trust placed in him by the community. As part of his sentence, Thornton will serve half of his nine-year term in custody, with the remaining period to be served on license, under strict supervision.

During the arrest, Thornton made a provocative statement to police, asking, “You know I am the Mayor of Godalming?” This remark underscored his awareness of his former status and the gravity of his actions. Despite his guilty pleas, he maintained not guilty pleas on charges related to voyeurism and paying for sexual services involving a child, which will remain on his record.
