BRAVE VICTIM SPEAKS OF 25 YEARS OF NIGHTMARES AND SELF HARM AFTER ABUSE
A courageous woman from Cornwall, who was groomed and sexually assaulted by a paedophile as a child, has spoken publicly about the enduring trauma that has haunted her for over 25 years.During a heartfelt victim impact statement read aloud in court, the mother detailed how the abuse inflicted by Simon Tanton in Devon has affected every part of her life.
Delivering her statement at Truro Crown Court today (Wednesday, June 10), she described how the abuse has contributed to her struggles with anxiety, depression, body image issues, and self-harm.
She stated, "I started hurting myself on my arms and breasts when I was a child.
I would have cut off my breast if I could have." The woman also revealed that her past abuse has made her wary around men, to the extent that she finds it difficult to embrace her own father and grandfather, who have shown her love and support—actions she cannot reciprocate because of her trauma.
She explained that she is overly protective of her children and that certain triggers, such as specific songs or foods, can provoke panic attacks, eating disorders, and heightened anxiety.
The court heard that she has taken extended leave from work due to the significant stress from both the abuse and the court proceedings, which have severely impacted her mental health.
Even hearing someone with a Devon accent can serve as a reminder of her past abuse, as the crime occurred in that region during her childhood.
The brave mother also shared how testifying in court has been an arduous experience, hindering her healing process.
"I wish I could hug my dad, but I can't because of what Simon did to me," she said.
"It's really affected my relationship with him." 45-year-old Tanton, now residing on Rapson Road in Liskeard, was convicted by a jury following a recent trial at Truro Crown Court of six counts of indecent assault on a child related to his historic offences.
His Honour Judge Simon Carr stated that the harm suffered by the victim has been lifelong and devastating.
"All that you did to her as a child continues to influence her 25 years later," Judge Carr told Tanton.
"Certain music triggers memories.
She still suffers from nightmares.
This shows that such offences leave lasting wounds.
You are a stark example of that." Tanton was sentenced to 16 years in prison, with an additional year on extended licence.
He will serve approximately two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
He will also be registered as a sex offender for life and is subject to a lifelong restraining order preventing contact with his victim.
