SIMON QUINN OF HAWKESLEY SENTENCED IN BIRMINGHAM FOR CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT AND OTHER CRIMES

In a recent court session held at Birmingham Crown Court, Simon Quinn, a resident of Hawkesley, faced serious charges related to child sexual assault. The proceedings revealed a series of disturbing behaviors from Quinn, who, during the trial, displayed a volatile temper that culminated in swearing at the jury and dismissing his legal team. Despite his outbursts, the court maintained its focus on delivering justice.

Quinn, aged 35, was already serving time in prison when he appeared in court to face allegations of sexually assaulting a young girl. The assault was alleged to have occurred over a period from January 2006 to January 2007, involving a victim under the age of 13. The jury, composed of seven men and five women, deliberated carefully and reached a unanimous verdict, finding Quinn guilty of the charges.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Mrs. Justice Macur commended the jury for their diligence and emotional restraint in reaching their verdict. However, Quinn's reaction was far from subdued. He began to curse at the court's decision and requested an adjournment, claiming he needed to speak with his defence barrister, Peter Arnold. When granted this request, Quinn abruptly left the courtroom, slamming the door behind him.

Approximately fifteen minutes later, Quinn reappeared, flanked by two security guards. He announced that he had dismissed his legal team and demanded a retrial. He also requested that the court remove his dismissed defence team from the courtroom, a request that was denied by Judge Macur. The judge then proceeded to sentence Quinn to two years in prison, a sentence to run consecutively with his previous four-year sentence for theft.

In her remarks, Mrs. Justice Macur emphasized the gravity of Quinn's actions, noting that his behaviour caused emotional distress to the victim. She acknowledged that physical injuries appeared minimal but condemned the opportunistic nature of his offences, especially given the vulnerability of the young girl involved. The judge highlighted the severity of the offence, particularly considering the victim's youth, and indicated that Quinn would likely serve at least half of his two-year sentence, subject to good behaviour and segregation requirements within the prison system.

Furthermore, Quinn was ordered to register as a sex offender and was banned from working with children. Despite his protests, the court upheld these conditions, underscoring the seriousness of his crimes.

Outside the court, the mother of the victim expressed relief that the legal process had concluded. She conveyed her concerns about the lasting impact of the assault on her daughter, emphasizing the emotional toll the incident has taken on their family. The victim's mother chose not to be named for legal reasons.

In addition to the child sex offence, Quinn's criminal record includes a recent four-year sentence handed down in April for stealing £21,000 from an elderly, housebound neighbour. The elderly victim, a 79-year-old woman, was left in debt following the theft, which further underscores Quinn's pattern of opportunistic and exploitative behaviour.
