SHEFFIELD TEACHER SIMON MURCH SENTENCED FOR CHILD RAPE IN STOKE-ON-TRENT AND SHOCKING ONLINE ABUSE
A teacher from Sheffield, Simon Murch, has been sentenced to prison after committing a series of heinous crimes involving a 12-year-old girl.The incident unfolded after Murch engaged in online conversations with the young victim, whom he falsely claimed to be 18 years old.
The court heard that Murch initially contacted her via WhatsApp, having first established communication on a website where he asked if she wanted him to be her 'sugar daddy.' During their exchanges, he requested explicit images, which she sent, including videos of herself performing sexual acts.
Subsequently, the predator and the girl arranged to meet in person at The Tollgate Hotel located in Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent.
Murch, aged 55, traveled from Sheffield to Stoke-on-Trent for this purpose.
Prosecutors emphasized that he would have immediately realized the girl was underage when he picked her up in his car, which was parked a short distance from her home.
The girl was instructed to stay in the vehicle while Murch went inside the hotel to book a room.
Once inside, they engaged in sexual activity, with Murch taking her clothes off and having full intercourse with her.
Following the sexual encounter, Murch took the girl to Smyths toy shop, where he spent approximately 500 pounds on toys for her.
The court was informed that the girl later confided in a teacher, revealing that she had a 'sugar daddy,' which led her parents and the police to become involved in the case.
Murch was arrested after the girl reported his actions to another schoolteacher.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge of raping a child under 13.
During the hearing, his defense argued that Murch was in a state of emotional distress due to the recent death of his mother and the suicide of his sister.
His legal representative, Alisdair Williamson KC, stated that the victim had consistently presented herself as being 18, even after the hotel meeting, and that Murch believed her to be an adult at all times.
Judge Graeme Smith sentenced Murch to seven and a half years in prison, with an extended license period of one year.
The judge also ordered that Murch serve at least two-thirds of his custodial sentence before being eligible for parole.
Additionally, Murch was placed on the sex offenders' register for life and subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
In his remarks, Judge Smith condemned Murch's actions, highlighting that as a teacher, he should have been acutely aware of the risks involved in online interactions with minors.
The judge pointed out that Murch's continued engagement with the girl after realizing her age was a grave breach of trust and responsibility.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Jordan Kirkland from Staffordshire Police's Child Protection and Exploitation Team commended the bravery of the victim and her family for coming forward.
He emphasized the police's commitment to tackling child sexual abuse and supporting survivors, encouraging anyone who has experienced similar abuse to seek help and report it.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to protect children from exploitation and harm.
