In a case that has shocked the local community of Carlisle, a 66-year-old man named Sidney Hepworth, also known by the alias Ray Wilson, has been sentenced to 28 months in prison following his conviction related to the possession and download of extremely disturbing child abuse images. The incident came to light after authorities discovered a significant collection of illegal material on his computer, which included both still images and moving footage of a highly disturbing nature.
Hepworth, a resident of Kingstown in Carlisle, was arrested and subsequently appeared before Carlisle Crown Court.
During the proceedings, he pleaded guilty to a total of 15 counts of downloading child pornography, along with two counts of possessing prohibited images of children and an additional two counts of possessing extreme pornography.
The severity of the images found on his device was underscored by the judge, who described them as the worst he had encountered in his entire legal career.
Judge Peter Hughes QC delivered a stark condemnation of the material, particularly highlighting the category five moving images, which represent the most serious level of such content.
The judge stated that these images constituted the worst abuse of a child he had ever seen in his judicial experience, emphasizing the gravity of the offense and the profound harm inflicted upon the victims depicted.
Following the sentencing, authorities confirmed that Hepworth would be placed on the Sex Offender Register for life, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities moving forward.
Additionally, he was barred from working with vulnerable adults and children, reflecting the serious concerns about his potential risk to others.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Coughlan expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “I am pleased Hepworth is facing jail after the quantity and levels of images that were found in his possession.
There is absolutely no excuse for his behaviour, and today justice has been served.” The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of such heinous material, and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from exploitation and abuse.
