CARLISLE RAPIST WHO TIED VICTIM'S HANDS WITH A SCARF IS JAILED
A man has been sentenced to nine years in prison after a jury at Carlisle Crown Court found him guilty of rape. The defendant, Limann Matubber, aged 26 and formerly residing on Warwick Road in Carlisle, maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings, denying any wrongdoing, the court was told.
Despite his claims, the jury accepted the prosecution’s case after considering the evidence presented, which included the allegation that Matubber forced himself on the woman despite her protests and repeated refusals to have sex.
Additionally, it was proven that he threatened the woman with a knife, causing her to fear she was about to be stabbed, which led her to scream instinctively.
Delivering his verdict, Judge Michael Fanning stated, “She repeatedly told him she did not want to have sex,” and that “you had sex against her will and despite her protests.” During the hearing, which Matubber watched via a prison video link, he was seen holding his head in his hands.
The jury reached majority verdicts convicting him of both the rape and the threat with a blade.
Defense lawyer John Crawford explained that since moving to the UK, Matubber had undergone a “significant cultural shift” and changed his lifestyle.
He added that the defendant had been granted asylum after suffering persecution in his home country because of his political activism.
Since being remanded into custody, Matubber had experienced suicidal thoughts.
Due to the severity of his convictions, there is a potential risk of deportation once he completes his prison sentence.
Judge Fanning noted that Matubber had previously demonstrated good character.
He also stated that future considerations by authorities will include the risks he may face if returned to his home country.
Addressing the defendant, the judge said, “The fact that you have been convicted of serious offences here does not mean that you should be abandoned back in Bangladesh; this country rightly protects even those who commit the worst crimes…” Referring to the rape, the judge described the incident as “deeply traumatic.” It was decided that Matubber will be required to register as a sex offender indefinitely.
Following sentencing, Detective Constable Josh Daniel commented, “I want to thank the victim for her bravery in coming forward and reporting what happened.” He added, “I hope the sentence today provides her with some closure.” The police continue to encourage anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence to contact them so they can investigate.
