SHONA MCBAIN FROM MIDDLEFIELD ABERDEEN STARVES DOGS TO DEATH AND ALLOWS OTHERS TO WASTE AWAY

In a disturbing case that has shocked animal welfare advocates, Shona McBain, also known as Shona Wilks, a resident of Middlefield in Aberdeen, was found guilty of severe animal neglect involving her dogs. Born on December 20, 1974, McBain’s actions led to the tragic death of one dog and the suffering of two others, highlighting a grave case of cruelty and neglect.

McBain admitted to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) inspectors that she had neglected her Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Lexie and Roxy, as well as a lurcher named Ruby. The neglect was so severe that Roxy, in particular, had to be euthanized due to her dire condition. Roxy was found to be in a state of extreme emaciation, with her body so skeletal that her temples appeared sunken and her muscles and fat reserves had completely depleted. The SPCA inspector Fiona McKenzie described her condition as heartbreaking, stating, “Roxy was like a skeleton. The temples of her head were extremely sunken and she had no fat or muscle at all.”

When Roxy was removed from McBain’s property, she was so weak that she could not walk and had to be carried to the SPCA’s vehicle. Upon arrival at the veterinary clinic, her condition was classified as semi-collapsed and critically emaciated. Despite efforts to save her, the veterinarian had no choice but to put her to sleep overnight to end her suffering. Ruby, the other dog, was also found to be very thin, though she survived and was later cared for by the SSPCA, eventually making a full recovery. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Lexie was also in poor health but recovered fully under the care of the animal welfare organization.

In a statement, Fiona McKenzie expressed her sorrow over Roxy’s fate, saying, “Tragically, Roxy’s condition deteriorated overnight and there was no option for the vet but to put her to sleep to end her suffering.” She added that Lexie and Ruby had been given a second chance at life and had since been adopted into loving new homes.

This case is not the first time McBain has come into conflict with the law. In September 2013, she was sentenced to a community order after threatening her husband, Kenneth Wilks, with a knife. Despite her recent conviction for animal cruelty, she avoided imprisonment. McBain, who also owns several cats, was handed a three-year ban on owning dogs, a restriction that has since expired in August 2017. At the time of this report, it appears she may now own a lurcher-type dog, raising concerns about ongoing animal welfare issues and the need for vigilant oversight by authorities.

McBain’s sentencing for her latest offense included a 135-hour community service order and the three-year ban on owning dogs. Animal welfare advocates and the authorities are hopeful that her activities will continue to be monitored closely to prevent further cruelty. The case has garnered significant media attention, emphasizing the importance of animal protection laws and the need for strict enforcement to prevent such tragedies in the future.
