SHAUN WIGHTMAN AND SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN BARNSLEY AND SCOTLAND

Shaun Wightman, a 57-year-old man from Barnsley, was involved in a disturbing criminal case that led to his imprisonment after a series of heinous acts and an extended attempt to evade justice.

Wightman was initially on trial at Sheffield Crown Court last year, facing multiple serious charges related to the sexual abuse of a young girl.

During the proceedings, he fled from the city of Sheffield, sparking a police manhunt that would span across the United Kingdom.

The charges against Wightman were particularly grave.

He faced four counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13, two counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and numerous other allegations including engaging in sexual activity in front of a child and taking indecent images of a minor.

The court heard detailed evidence of his abusive behavior, which implicated him in a pattern of predatory conduct.

While Wightman was absent from the court, a verdict was reached—he was found guilty of eight of the charges.

These convictions were based on evidence related to the girl, with whom he was in a position of trust.

The judge presiding over the case, Jeremy Richardson, expressed clear concern about the severity of the abuse and the potential harm that could have escalated had the victim grown older before the abuse was uncovered.

The police investigation eventually led to Wightman’s re-arrest on October 31, after intelligence pinpointed his location.

Officers discovered him hiding out in a property in Scotland, where he had apparently been living with children during his time on the run.

This revelation caused further outrage, as it became clear he was actively evading justice for a significant period.

His arrest ended his escape and brought him back into custody.

Following his capture, Wightman appeared before court on November 4, where he was sentenced to a total of 16 years behind bars.

The court documentation and reports from Examiner Live include remarks from Judge Richardson, who emphasized the seriousness of Wightman’s crimes.

“I am in no doubt that the abuse would have escalated had she become older before what you did to her was discovered,” the judge stated.

The court further heard that during the trial, jurors were compelled to view disturbing images that Wightman had taken of his young victim after he had initially disappeared on the second day of proceedings.

The case was complicated by Wightman’s failure to attend the trial initially, which led to the court deciding whether to proceed in his absence on the fourth day.

Evidence demonstrated that he was believed to be in Scotland at that time, prompting police action.

His arrest came exactly six days later.

Wightman admitted to breaching bail conditions by failing to appear at his trial.

His defense lawyer, Rodney Eric Ferm, highlighted the fact that this would be the longest sentence Wightman had ever served, noting that he had no prior convictions since 1995.

Mr.

Ferm also provided context about Wightman’s health issues, mentioning a motorcycle accident roughly twenty years ago, which had left him in poor health.

Wightman has been unable to work since and has been receiving ongoing mental health care, including being placed on suicide watch and undergoing tests for cancer.

Judge Richardson concluded the sentencing by condemning Wightman’s actions.

“You were arrested in Scotland by the police hiding in a house where there were children.

You were a fugitive from justice.

This case involves the cruel abuse of a girl,” he declared, finalizing Wightman’s sentence at 16 years imprisonment for his despicable crimes in Barnsley and Scotland.
