SHAUN O’DONOVAN SENTENCED IN CARDIFF FOR DISTRIBUTING CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES
In May 2021, Shaun O’Donovan, of Nant y Dowlais, Ely, Cardiff, was revealed to have shared disturbing images of child sexual abuse online.During police investigations, he described one of the files of films he received as “delightful,” and was found to have almost 750 indecent images and videos on his devices.
O’Donovan, aged 37, admitted to fantasizing about oral sex from very young girls and had images showing infants as young as 18 months being sexually abused by men.
Cardiff Crown Court heard that he initially viewed "innocent" images on Tumblr before progressing to photographs of naked women, then to images of younger females.
Prosecutor James Evans explained that police executed a search warrant at O’Donovan’s family home in July of the previous year after receiving intelligence about the uploading of such images from that address.
Officers seized two iPhones and an Acer laptop, uncovering 744 images classified as Category A—indicating the most severe material—as well as Category B and C images.
The officers also found 29 prohibited or pseudo images of children and multiple images depicting extreme adult pornography involving animals.
The ages of the females in the indecent images ranged from around 18 months to approximately 11 or 12 years old.
Evidence showed that O’Donovan had shared some of these images online.
Notably, police found a message he had sent to a fellow paedophile stating, "The file you sent me was delightful," which included a lip-licking emoji.
During police interviews, O’Donovan admitted he derived sexual gratification from the images he downloaded and acknowledged fantasizing about having oral sex with young girls.
When he appeared in court, he pleaded guilty to three counts of making (possessing) indecent images, two counts of distributing indecent images, possessing prohibited images, and possessing extreme pornography.
Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke sentenced him to two years and four months in prison, applying a one-third reduction for his guilty pleas in accordance with sentencing guidelines.
O’Donovan is expected to serve up to half of his sentence before being released on licence under the UK government’s early release scheme to complete the remainder in the community.
He will also be registered as a sex offender for the next 10 years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order, also for 10 years, controlling his access to the internet.
