SHAUN HINKS FROM PORTSMOUTH AND SLOUGH JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TEENAGER
In a case that has shocked the communities of Portsmouth and Slough, Shaun Hinks, a 45-year-old care worker, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of grossly abusing his position of trust to engage in sexual activities with a teenage girl. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about Hinks's misconduct, which took place over a period in May 2013.Hinks, who resided on Ship Leonard Street in Portsmouth, was charged with multiple serious offenses, including seven counts of sexual activity with a minor and one count of taking an indecent photograph of a child. The incidents involved a girl under the age of 18 and occurred at various locations, notably at Mallards, a children’s home in Slough, and during a brief stay at a hotel in Portsmouth, where Hinks had arranged to meet his young victim.
The court heard that Hinks pleaded guilty to five of the seven sexual activity charges on July 16, 2014. However, he maintained his innocence on two counts of sexual activity and the charge related to the indecent photograph, which will now be left on file. The remaining charges were not pursued further.
Detective Constable Luke Simms, who led the investigation, emphasized the gravity of Hinks’s actions. He stated, “Hinks took advantage of a young girl in care by grossly abusing his position of trust. Although the victim may have believed she was consenting at the time, she was clearly vulnerable and was being systematically groomed by Hinks. He would have been fully aware that the victim was under 18, and given his role and responsibilities, engaging in sexual activity with her was a serious criminal offense and entirely inappropriate.”
He further added, “His behavior was completely unacceptable, and today’s sentence reflects the severity of what transpired. I appreciate that this has been a difficult case for the victim, who trusted Hinks, and I want to thank her for her cooperation throughout the investigation.”
Following the police investigation, Hinks was suspended from his duties at Mallards and has since been dismissed from his position. The case highlights the importance of safeguarding vulnerable young people and the consequences faced by those who breach their trust in such a grievous manner.
