SHANE AND DAWN CUNNINGHAM FROM STANLEY SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS IN COUNTY DURHAM

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Stanley, County Durham, a former couple, Shane Cunningham and Dawn Cunningham, have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms after being found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young girls over several years.

Shane Cunningham, aged 56 and residing on Kimberley Gardens in Stanley, was convicted of multiple serious charges, including four counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault, two charges of sexual activity with a child, and gross indecency. The court heard that his crimes began when one of his victims was just six years old, with Shane subjecting her to repeated abuse, including inappropriate acts such as 'French kissing' and more severe sexual assaults. The abuse continued over a period of years, with the victim being raped and assaulted regularly from the age of 13, with some estimates suggesting that these acts occurred between 400 and 500 times until she reached 17.

Another young girl was also victimized by Shane Cunningham, who sexually abused her on numerous occasions, leaving her deeply traumatized. The court was told that by the time she was 14 or 15, these assaults were happening as often as twice a week. The judge, Tim Gittins, described the impact on her as devastating, noting that her experiences left her suicidal, yet she was too frightened to report the abuse immediately. It was only after a significant period that she found the courage to come forward and report the crimes to the police.

Dawn Cunningham, aged 46 and from Forth Street in Stanley, was convicted of two counts of gross indecency and one count of indecent assault. The court revealed that she began sexually abusing a girl from the age of 11 or 12, with her actions also causing profound harm to her victim. Despite her claims of innocence, the jury found her guilty of these offenses.

Judge Gittins emphasized the resilience of the victims, acknowledging the emotional toll the abuse had taken on them. He stated, “It would not be right to pass sentence without me acknowledging the effect your offending has had on your victims. They have demonstrated an extraordinary level of resilience. They have undoubtedly felt in anguish for many years, and it’s to their enormous credit that they were able to give evidence. Although the sentences can’t turn back the clock and undo what happened, I hope the findings of the jury will give them some closure in the months and years to come.”

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Gittins described Shane Cunningham as a dangerous offender, citing the extensive nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to young females. Both Shane and Dawn Cunningham were ordered to sign the sex offenders register indefinitely and were subjected to sexual harm prevention orders, reflecting the seriousness of their offenses.

While Shane Cunningham was described by some as a kind and hardworking individual who had worked as a chef in care homes, his defense argued that he suffers from deafness and had been under significant mental and emotional strain, especially after the breakup with Dawn. His legal team highlighted his efforts to support his family financially and his struggles with mental health, including the trauma of being assaulted in custody.

Similarly, Dawn Cunningham’s defense maintained her innocence, emphasizing her capacity for tenderness and trustworthiness, which starkly contrasted with her criminal convictions. She reportedly suffers from health issues that have made her life in custody particularly challenging.

Both individuals now face the reality of lengthy prison sentences, with Shane Cunningham receiving 16 years and Dawn Cunningham four years. Their convictions mark a significant moment in the fight against child sexual abuse in the Stanley community and serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact such crimes have on victims and their families.
