SHANE HARE OF HULL SENTENCED FOR ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR TOWARD GIRLFRIEND IN HULL AND BRIDLINGTON

In July 2020, a disturbing case of domestic abuse emerged involving Shane Hare, a man from Hull who exploited his role as a 'carer' to systematically mistreat his girlfriend.

Hare, residing on Kimmeridge Close in Hull, was arrested on February 10 after a violent incident where he confiscated his partner's phone, physically assaulted her, and issued a chilling threat, stating: "I can hold you down and kill you right here and I’ll kill your son." Hare, aged 42 and a father of two, had a history of a close relationship with his victim, having previously babysat her before they began their romantic relationship approximately two and a half years prior.

During this period, he assumed the role of her 'carer,' which he used to exert control and manipulate her.

Over the course of their relationship, Hare subjected his partner to relentless verbal and physical abuse, often leaving her frightened and isolated.

The abuse was not limited to physical violence; Hare also restricted her contact with her family, seized her benefits, and refused to provide her with adequate financial support.

Court proceedings revealed that Hare had registered himself as the carer for his partner, which allowed him to claim her entitled benefits.

He would only give her small weekly sums of between £10 and £20, further demonstrating his controlling nature.

Following an assault on January 30, a domestic violence prevention order was issued, prompting the victim to move into her father's house for safety.

Her daughter, who had become increasingly elusive after meeting Hare, refused to visit her father’s home unless she was frightened and visibly bruised.

On February 3, Hare sent her a text message urging her to ignore her family and meet him so they could start anew in Bridlington.

Despite her initial feelings of love and longing for Hare, the victim agreed to leave with him, believing they could begin a fresh life at his aunt’s house in Bridlington.

However, the relationship quickly deteriorated.

On February 10, when she attempted to contact her family, Hare’s anger erupted.

He became aggressive, entering the kitchen and threatening her with violence, saying: "I can hold you down and kill you right here and I’ll kill your son." The court heard that this violent episode lasted about an hour, during which Hare also expressed frustration over needing money to repair his car.

He then went upstairs, and when the victim followed, he demanded her mobile phone, claiming the police could trace it.

He called her an 'idiot' and a 'slag,' before breaking her SIM card in a fit of rage.

The situation escalated further when Hare punched her in the head, causing swelling and a headache, before leaving the home, prompting the police to be called.

Hare’s criminal history is extensive, with a record of 33 convictions spanning 82 offences since 1990.

His past crimes include indecent assault, burglary, assaulting police officers, harassment, and battery, illustrating a long-standing pattern of violent and criminal behavior.

At Hull Crown Court, Judge David Tremberg sentenced Hare to 21 months in prison for the assault and for breaching a suspended sentence order.

Additionally, a five-year restraining order was imposed to prevent Hare from making any contact with his victim in the future.

The judge emphasized the seriousness of Hare’s actions, highlighting his history of domestic violence and intimidation as aggravating factors in the case.
