SEWA SINGH'S SHOCKING CRIME IN NOTTINGHAM: ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 11-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In June 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Nottingham involving a shop worker named Sewa Singh, who was convicted of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl. The young girl had been sent by her mother to purchase frozen food from a local shop, a routine task that took a sinister turn due to Singh's actions.
Singh, who had overstayed his permitted stay in the United Kingdom, was later served with deportation papers and is now awaiting removal to India following his conviction.
His illegal status was uncovered after the assault, which occurred in the city of Nottingham, a place where he had been residing since 2016.
According to court proceedings, the assault happened when Singh, who was living on Mansfield Road, leaned into the frozen food section of the shop.
The girl, who was on her tiptoes reaching into the freezer, was suddenly thrust into Singh’s back.
This moment marked the beginning of a series of troubling events.
Singh’s illegal residency was a key factor in the case, and the judge, John Burgess, explicitly stated that Singh was to be deported once his custodial sentence was completed.
Judge Burgess sentenced Singh to 30 weeks in prison, describing his actions as “unpleasant and dirty.” He also acknowledged that deportation papers had been served and expressed hope that Singh would be returned to India after serving his sentence.
The judge clarified that no Sexual Harm Prevention Order was issued, as Singh would not be at liberty in the UK again.
However, Singh was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register, though the judge remarked that “that may be academic,” given his imminent deportation.
Evidence presented in court included CCTV footage from the shop, which showed Singh working in a newsagent when the girl arrived to buy frozen food.
The footage revealed that she initially left the shop but returned after realizing she had purchased the wrong items.
She explained her mistake at the counter and was permitted to exchange the goods.
As the CCTV footage played in slow motion, it captured Singh brushing past the girl and then carrying out the sexual assault he later pleaded guilty to on Thursday, June 27.
It was also revealed that Singh had engaged in grooming behavior on previous occasions, giving the girl sweets and acting in a friendly manner, which contributed to her trust.
Prosecutor Jonathan Straw told the court that the girl was very upset by the incident.
She reported the matter to her mother, who then confronted Singh in the shop.
The girl later provided a recorded statement to police, expressing her fear of trusting people and her anxiety about being near others.
She confided that she sometimes dreams about what happened, highlighting the lasting trauma caused by Singh’s actions.
Singh, aged 32, had no prior convictions and had been living in Nottingham since 2016.
Despite his long residence, he overstayed his visa, which led to his illegal status being discovered only after the assault.
Following his arrest in May, police were unable to locate him until his eventual detention.
The case underscores the serious consequences of illegal immigration combined with criminal behavior, and the court’s decision reflects the gravity of the offense committed in Nottingham.
